Though formed in 1877, the north-east club were transformed (and renamed from Newcastle Gosforth) when bought by former Newcastle United chairman Sir John Hall who began to build a sporting empire
in the city. His investment lead to some success on the pitch, largely under the leadership of coach Rob Andrew and World Cup-winning hero Jonny Wilkinson. And that has been noticed by the public
in what has traditionally been a strong football-supporting area. Whether the Falcons can go further remains to be seen.
