Spooky Goings On

Want to get into the Halloween spirit but not sure what to do and where to go? Square Meal brings you a round up of the best spooky goings on …

At 1 Lombard Street Brasserie (tel: 0870 780 8147) in the City, chef Herbert Berger will be serving up his famous dishes using pumpkin and pumpkinseed oil. Among the many dishes rotating on the menu there’ll be pumpkin soup with smoky bacon, navarin of lamb cooked in a pumpkin and, for dessert, pumpkin, chilli and ginger sorbet with bourbon whisky chocolate sauce. If you can’t make it this weekend, the dishes will be available throughout November.

Marcus Wareing’s casual eatery, Banquette (tel: 7420 2392) at the Savoy Hotel, will be serving up two fiendishly-good desserts over the weekend of the 30th-31st: sticky toffee and apple pudding with vanilla ice-scream and treacle pumpkin tart.

Fancy a refined Halloween? Head to The Bentley Kempinski hotel (tel: 7244 5555) in Chelsea this weekend, where chef Andrew Turner has created a Halloween afternoon tea (£24 per person) which can be taken either in the lobby or in Peridot (the informal dining room). Treats will include chocolate broomsticks, trickle treacle tarts and pumpkin pie.

One for the kids, on Fri 29th & Sat 30th the Blue Kangaroo (tel: 7371 7622) in Chelsea will be hosting a Halloween disco for 4-7 year olds in the basement play area. It’ll cost £15 per child with food included, while adults can enjoy a meal in peace in the upstairs restaurant.

Fearless folk should make a trip down to Planet Hollywood (tel: 7287 1000) in Piccadilly Circus on Sunday 31st October between 12N-8pm. There’ll be a Halloween party with a fancy dress competition, face painting and scary movies on show while a special menu will offer the likes of bogey-man’s pumpkin soup, devilled chicken and a death by chocolate dessert.

Bug Restaurant & Lounge (tel: 7738 3366) is situated in the crypt of St Matthew’s church in Brixton so it’s the perfect place to celebrate Halloween. On Sunday 31st there’ll be scary stories, special cocktails and classic horror flicks playing in the cocoon room.

Doughnut du jour, Krispy Kreme (tel: 7730 1234), have created a special black and orange sprinkle-topped to get customers into the Halloween spirit. It’ll be available at all four outlets, plus they’ll also be selling Krispy Kreme gift vouchers, a great giveaway for sweet-toothed trick-or-treaters.

There’s something for everyone at Hard Rock Café (tel: 7629 0382) on Piccadilly this weekend. On Friday 29th from 10pm-3am there’ll be a Halloween party with those turning up in fancy dress receiving a free zombie cocktail while Sunday 31st will be a day for the young ’uns (£6.95 per person) with spooky games, a monster mash menu and trick or treat goody bags for the way home.
