Re-corking clinic for vintage Penfolds reds

Red Wine

On 1 October 2008, Penfolds – maker of some of the world’s most collectable wines – is offering a red wine re-corking clinic at Somerset House. Anyone owning a bottle of Penfolds red that's over 15 years old can have its condition assessed by chief winemaker Peter Gago, who will determine both the opportune drinking time and continued cellaring potential of each bottle. There is also the opportunity to seek market appraisal from Christie’s (which can benefit sellers on the secondary auction market). Simply register by Friday 19 September at for your place.

The Process
The winemaker will visually inspect the bottle and then (if necessary), remove the cork to test its contents, together with the owner. A small amount of wine is drawn to allow the winemaker to assess its quality, and if it is deemed to be a good example of the style and vintage, it is topped up with the current vintage of the particular wine. Each bottle is then re-corked, recapsuled, certified and numbered, with a special label signed by the assessing Penfolds winemaker and endorsed by Christie’s (the certification of assessed wines can often benefit sellers on the secondary auction market).

Re-corking clinics worldwide
Since the first Penfolds re-corking clinic was held in Australia in 1991, it has gone from strength to strength, taking place in global cities such as New York, Hong Kong and Munich. Gago adds, ‘since the first clinic over 90,000 bottles have been lovingly inspected, opened, tasted, topped and recorked to ensure their prolonged cellar development and optimum drinking. The clinics give our clients the opportunity to learn more about their wines and to gain confidence in their investment, something no other wine company offers on such a huge scale.’
