Great Food & Wine for Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year kicks off this year on February 9th and will follow with 15 days of festivities to celebrate the beginning of the year of the rooster. The main event will be on Sunday 13th, when crowds will gather in Trafalgar Square for live entertainment including dragon dancing, acrobatics and a performance by the Beijing Opera.

If all that gets you in the mood for a good Chinese meal, then follow Square Meal’s advice and book a table at one of London’s top Chinese restaurants listed below. Most will be serving traditional New Year’s food and, while you’re trying new things, bear in mind that beer is not always the best accompaniment to Chinese food.

A good bet is to look for bottles from Alsace in eastern France, a wide range of which are ideally suited to Oriental food. For instance, if you’re ordering dishes spiced up with Szechuan pepper, then the roundedness of Gewurztraminer is just the ticket, while traditional Shanghai dishes such as sweet and sour chicken are better suited to a rich wine with strong acidity, like Tokay Pinot Gris. Dry and flinty Riesling is the flagship grape of Alsace and makes a perfect foil for unadorned Cantonese dishes or simply prepared seafood.
