Escape to paradise at UK RumFest

UK RumFest returns for a fifth successive year to celebrate the spirit of rum – and it’s bigger and better than ever before. The event, which takes place from 15-16 October at Kensington Olympia 2, promises to whisk you away to tropical climes with samples of more than 400 rums, live music and dancers, cocktail competitions that pitch the best mixologists in the UK against each other, and fine-food tastings and workshops. Plus, there’s a chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to the Barbados Food, Wine and Rum Festival in November.

Whether you’re a connoisseur or a novice, RumFest will give your tastebuds a workout with the chance to sample more than 400 rums from all over the world and learn about the history and provenance of the spirit.

Plus, the Tropical Food Market and Mette Cantina, a workshop that’s new to the festival for 2011, will see ‘rum chef’ Paul Yellin and chef Colin Brown cook up rum-infused dishes in a series of live demonstrations. Sign up to one of the chefs’ workshops or seminars to discover more about rum-infused ingredients such as chocolate.

A speakeasy-style bar will be serving in-the-know guests at a secret location within the event. This invite-only pop-up, sponsored by Appleton, will be serving Appleton-rum cocktails to its VIPs.

RumFest is open on 15 and 16 October from 12pm-6pm. Tickets cost £22 and can be booked via Ticketsource. For more information, head to the RumFest website.

Square Meal rum lovers can enjoy a 25% discount when booking tickets for Sunday 16 October. To redeem your discount, quote ‘SQUARE-RUM’ when purchasing your tickets.

This year RumFest has teamed up with Barbados Tourist Authority to find the ‘Rum Experience Chef of the Year’. If you think you’ve got what it takes to create a rum-infused canapé, you could find yourself jetting off to Barbados for the Food, Wine and Rum Festival. To enter, create a canapé that uses rum as the main ingredient, then send the recipe and your details to, with RUM CHEF in the subject line, before Friday 7 October. The winner will be crowned in full glory at RumFest on Sunday 16 October.
