Built as a hunting lodge in the 13th century, New Hall is a picture of medieval splendour. Now part of Hand Picked Hotels, it’s still accessed by drawbridge. There are crenelated towers and mullioned windows on the outside, but on the inside it’s well-equipped for events. The oak-panelled Great Chamber was built for a visit from HenryVIII and is suitably imposing. Small groups should book Oak, the once-secret study of the in-house alchemist.
