One of England’s most popular museums outside of London, the National Railway Museum in York is the largest of its kind in the world. It houses a colourful collection of locomotives alongside smart, modern function spaces. The Great Hall accommodates up to 1,000 guests and features a railway bridge and gates that were formerly used at Euston station. Guests can dine among Royal Carriages in the atmospheric Edwardian Station Hall that has a capacity of 800. Six separate spaces accommodate up to 100 delegates for meetings. For fine dining, there’s the beautifully restored rail carriage Countess of York that opened in 2015.Venue review of Visit York 4 Meetings Latest news From September this year until January 2017, the York-based National Railway Museum’s Gallery space will be available for business events and weddings.

Cultra, Holywood, Northern Ireland , Belfast, Belfast, BT18 0EU

Attracting a handsome one million visitors a year, this group’s four museums are packed with modern art, artefacts from Northern Ireland’s rich past and the odd Egyptian mummy. The result is an impressive list of spaces suitable for conferences and networking events through to corporate fun days and teambuilding. For the former, we particularly like the Ulster Folk and Transport museum: seat up to 500 delegates among the vast selection of Irish railway artefacts. For receptions you can fit a hundred or so more and there’s plenty to keep guests talking. You’ll need something to break up all those business meetings, so take a look at the teambuilding activities at the Ulster American Folk Park. We particularly like the sound of Irish whiskey and Guinness tastings. With all four destinations being in, or close to, Belfast, connections are a doddle, for those coming from abroad.

As a venue, it offers space for teambuilding, product launches, private dinners, cocktail receptions, evening panel discussions and Christmas parties. The Suite is its newest event space. It comes with its own reception area and a lift to the top floors, giving guests views of the city centre over dinner. Once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, today, Hever is well set up for events. Formal banquets suit the grand Castle Dining Room, with its carved-wood minstrels gallery. In the Astor Wing, the Tudor Suite overlooks formal lawns and is a lovely setting for drinks receptions. Set within its 600-acre grounds, the Guthrie Pavilion is the largest event space, while the Italian Loggia, by the venue’s lake, is our favourite spot for summer receptions. Sir Frank Williams was the driving force behind one of Formula One’s most successful teams. Today, he lends his name to the Williams Conference Centre. At the F1 outfit’s Oxfordshire base, its modern event facilities are housed in the building that used to be the home of BMW’s Le Mans project. Once they are done meeting, training and networking, groups small and large can wander around Sir Frank’s private collection of more than 40 Grand Prix racing cars. Or they can get active, with guests going head to head on a giant Scalextric or taking on the Pit Stop Challenge together. However you want to structure your day, on-site event managers offer full planning support.

St James's Gate, Dublin 8, Dublin,

As well as being one of Dublin’s most popular tourist attractions, The Guinness Storehouse is also one of the Irish capital’s most visually striking venues. Guests are greeted in a grand glass atrium studded with imposing steel beams, and the dramatic modern design continues throughout the Storehouse’s seven floors, on which various event spaces can be found. Event bookers can choose to take over just one room, a whole floor or the entire building and the spaces are flexible enough to cater to conferences, exhibitions and training days as well as product launches, parties and wedding receptions for between 20 and 2,000 guests. The venue’s crowning glory is the Gravity Bar, a circular space perched seven storeys up with 360° views across the Dublin skyline. This space comes into its own during evening receptions, when the city’s twinkling lights make a dazzling vista. Tastings and tours can be included.

Leicester Tigers Rugby Club Aylestone Road Leicester , Leicester, Leicestershire, LE2 7TR

Hosting 24,000 fans on match days, Leicester Tigers is the home of England’s most successful domestic rugby club, and one of the largest spaces for events in the Midlands. The venue is well versed in exhibition hosting, but isn’t averse to some rock ’n’ roll, with stages and crowds taking over the pitch for live concerts. The spaces also work well for seminars, parties and wedding receptions. In 2016, the Clubhouse conference centre was added as part of an £8m investment. Full of light, the double-aspect room has pitch views and a refreshingly contemporary feel – while still preserving the club’s rich history.

Woburn Abbey, Woburn, Bedfordshire, MK17 9WA

In the late 18th century, the 5th Duke of Bedford commissioned Henry Holland to build an orangery, before deciding the space would make a fine home for his sculpture collection. With its own terrace and a lake-view rose garden, the Sculpture Gallery today offers a grand setting for conferences, product launches and gala dinners amid its classical columns. Two adjoining rooms can serve as breakout facilities or host smaller standalone meetings, while the venue team can suggest ways to combine the gallery with some of the estate’s other impressive locations. Teambuilding activities can, of course, be centred around the landscaped gardens.

We like the dining room that showcases Chinese porcelain and French tapestries, as well as the standalone Maiden’s Tower (once a Tudor bake house) with its five en-suite bedrooms. The carefully restored timber-framed barn of Fairfax Hall is our pick for receptions, while the Garden House is the spot for small meetings.

Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Southern lane, Stratford-upon-Avon , Warwickshire, Warwickshire, CV37 6BB

Still looking fresh from its transformation project, the home of the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon marries Victorian and art deco design within a modern, functional space. Accessible and spacious, the building houses a variety of venues suitable for events – from 1,000 seated guests in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre to a stand-up reception for 20 at the top of the Theatre Tower, where guests can soak up views over the River Avon. It is also a popular spot for weddings – both stages are licensed for civil ceremonies, as is the gothic Swan Room with its stained-glass windows. A more modern offering is the Clore Learning Centre, which is used for teambuilding and activity days for up to 100 delegates. As you’d expect, RSC adds a touch of the theatrical to their bespoke events, and the venue’s in-house events team can add both backstage tours and tickets to performances for event programmes.
