SquareMeal Review of Scarista House

It may be miles away, but this establishment is well worth the trip. A former manse, dating from the reign of George IV, Scarista House has a beautiful Hebridean setting, the classiest accommodation on Harris & the best food. Decor in the dining room is in keeping with the Georgian origins, while most of the raw materials used for the set dinner are either organic, local, home grown or all three & all the meat is free range. Vegetarians are also well catered for (but let the proprietors know in advance) & the menu is especially good on local seafood. A typical starter would be a veloute of Jerusalem artichokes & Puy lentils with smoked scallops from Uist, followed perhaps by navarin of Harris lamb with dauphinois potatoes, aubergine puree & fine beans, or langoustines caught off the east side of the island served with garlic mayonnaise, crushed olive potatoes & garden salad. Try the chocolate truffle with mocha ice cream for dessert or indulge in the choice selection of cheeses available.
