A proper pub with a real fire, pleasantly jumbled decor and a bright conservatory for summer dining, the Bladebone’s food kicks off with clever snacks such as the popular truffled ‘ham, egg and chips’ Scotch egg or rare-breed pork scratchings with apple and vanilla sauce. The bar menu majors on hearty pub classics (haddock and chips, burgers, pork and leek sausages with mash), while the restaurant offers something a little more refined: chicken liver parfait with chestnut and red onion jam ahead of whole local pigeon with thyme fondant potatoes, autumn vegetables, wild mushrooms and fig. Desserts are more than an afterthought – try the blackberry mille-feuille with wood sorrel, lemon and honey. To drink, there’s a good choice of beers at the bar, plus a decent wine list with plenty by the glass.
A keen eye and intellect would likely deduce that the staple dish for what this gastropub is known for and prides itself on is steak. You would not be disappointed to find out that the reputation is well earned, not for the number of steaks that it offers, but for the quality of the meat that is used, how it is prepared and cooked, and the enjoyment it proffers. Feather blade or rib eye, if you like steak then there is a very strong chance that this will be an inordinately enjoyable experience for you. Throw some chips onto the side of that meal and you have the complete package.Not to be confused with a one trick pony, the Bladebone Inn has more to offer. It is a pub, first and foremost, so expect beer of good quality to be served willingly, which will go down well with some bar snacks. Bar snacks? Do you mean nuts and crisps hanging from the walls? No, we don’t, we are talking about specially prepared warm snacks that can be ordered alongside your drinks. Just as in Spain where tapas is to be consumed one plate per drink, you can match what you drink with a snack like scampi, squid, small sausages, or beer battered halloumi cubes.The pub does offer more than steaks and snacks, with main menus comprising of lighter or just different meals to suit your fancy. You can eat here for breakfast, start your morning off right by sitting in an old inn like the Bladebone and tuck into a ‘proper’ breakfast just as patrons have done for hundreds of years before you. The pub is an old building, made new by renovations and rejuvenated philosophies to cookery and the art of the publican, but you can still feel the history seeping out of the gaps in brickwork, the ceiling beams that are older than the Queen, who would find the food suitable to her status.

Attended a family lunch at The Bladebone on Sunday 13 February. Nice looking pub and friendly welcome from the staff.We all had starters and I made the mistake of ordering the mussels “special” starter. A few hours later chronic and violent food poisoning symptoms kicked in and I spent the next 4 days suffering from acute gastroenteritis courtesy of being served contaminated shellfish. We contacted the pub via phone and email. No response initially but eventually promised a call from the owner. Predictably have heard nothing. If I poisoned my clients resulting in chronic illness I like to think I might respond in a different way and at the very least apologise.Crispy squid was a popular starter for the rest of our party. The feedback was ok but nothing spectacular.For the mains most ordered various roasts which looked nice but were average in quality. I ordered the burger which looked quite appetising but was cold when it arrived.This place markets itself as some amazing gastropub. It’s not - it's a nice pub with an expensive but very average and underwhelming food offer. I wouldn’t recommend eating at The Bladebone until they up their game and the owner/management team show some respect to their customers who pay a lot of money for very average – and in my case contaminated – food.PS This was our second visit as we dined at The Bladebone pre the pandemic. Thankfully no sickness ensued last time round but it was a similarly uninspiring and very average dining experience.

Bladebone Inn Was recommended by local friend, so I took her and another friend-both who know their food. I was told the place would be chocca full-not so. We were put on a bad table with a speaker blaring loud disco music, just a few feet above our heads. I asked for another table and we were moved- still with loud disco music. Lovely old English pub blaring disco music over lunch. Why? I asked 3times for it to be turned down and at last it was. Service by well-meaning local girl who had obviously had minimal training. We had to ask for water. We had to ask for the wine list. Later we asked for extra wine which never came. Starters judged to be from a bag from the fridge. My guests mains were judged to be OK. I had the worst Caesar salad of my life- it didn't remotely taste of Caesar dressing. I complained hoping someone might come to speak about it. No result. On paying I complained again about my awful salad, hoping it might be deducted from the bill. No. Attitude and service desultory- food a big let-down. Next day I wrote to the Management complaining about all as above. Not even acknowledged. The Bladebone has won Awards in the past, but seems like they imagine that will see them through the future. Not with me- I will never go again, nor recommend. A sad experience.
