Attempted to pass off a cheap chuck-eye steak as a sirloin
After a promising starter (squid steak on the hot stone), we were looking forward to a main dish of sirloin steak on the stone. This is what we were given: (Link removed. I've posted the photograph on other review sites. It shows a small, unusual-shaped piece of beef.) In addition to looking totally different to a sirloin cut, these steaks were chewy and extremely disappointing. When we told the waitress that we didn't believe we'd been served what we'd ordered, she went away apparently to check, and returned to inform us that there had been “a mistake” in the kitchen and admit that these were in fact chuck-eye steaks (normally served as part of the lunchtime menu and a far cheaper cut than sirloin). In compensation for this we were offered “something complimentary, e.g. dessert” (we had already been served all the wine we would need to accompany the meager meal, and would likely not order anything more.) After a quick look at the dessert menu and photographs on the restaurant website showing what appear to be bought-in, mass-produced cheesecake slices and brownies, we declined the offer of a complimentary dessert. When the bill arrived, the price difference between the sirloin and the chuck-eye had been deducted. I can only speculate as whether the supposed “mistake” was indeed accidental or whether they were intentionally trying to get away with charging a premium price while substituting cheap steaks. I do wonder whether the inverse of the mistake has ever occurred at this place and somebody's been given a sirloin instead of a chuck-eye… Somehow I doubt it. Either way, it should not be the responsibility the customer to identify specific cuts of beef to ensure that they are served and charged correctly. Because of this, based on my experience, I must post a negative rating and can not recommend Rango's at all.

After seeing Chrole's comment, we were not expecting much for our visit to this restaurant, but we were very much impressed and enjoyed their food and service yesterday night. We were on Wowcher and visited together with my colleagues(four of us), they were all impressed with their Hot Stone steak. Also their starter of grilled squid on Hot Stone was just amazing. The restaurant is run by Serbian couple, there is no problem with their services and their food is typical honest East European one which we enjoyed very much. In wintery evening, glass window from ceiling to floor may not be ideal but they brought fan heater as soon as we settled by the window. Good honest food in brasserie (but not restaurant). Will definitely visit again. George

Absolutely will not be going again! Bought a Groupon deal. £36 for a 3 course meal for two with a Cocktail. Bargin! Apart from the fact that there was, no customer service. Smiling, but completely inattentive. Had to physically wave and shout to get anyone's attention, along with the two tables beside me. Forgetful to say the least, and the whole place had the ambiance of a hospital waiting room. The steak on a stone was fine, although there was no option for a side dish of veg, even though in the photos online and the ones on the tables, there seemed to be an option of green veg and alternative potatoes. Not a vegetable to be seen. Bar the potatoes for chips of course… Chips and Salad only! Then came the desert. Horrid, just horrid! I ordered the Strawberry Cheesecake, should have known better after seeing the two plates of desert going back through the hatch beside me to the kitchen to be cleared. One including a pile of Pink Sludge! But who could have known that would be the Cheesecake? It had the consistency of lumpy moose, and was bright Pink throughout. When I finally got the attention of one of our waitresses, she sent over her manager, who promptly told me that I was welcome to order something else, but would absolutely be paying for both! I explained that this was not only my opinion, as I had seen two deserts go back to the kitchen already, but she told me that they had not complained about them, so obviously did not mind them, even though, they had been unable to eat them! I said that I found this to be a very interesting form of customer service, and she simply said that that was how it worked here… So I smiled, and asked for my bill… Only saving grace being, that she had the sense not to add the 12.5% gratuity. Should have knows better, given the fact that it was on Groupon. But was really looking forward to the idea of cooking my own steak. Good job I was… (Cooking my own)
