SquareMeal Review of Heathcotes Brasserie

For more than 20 years, Lancashire hero Paul Heathcote’s Longridge restaurant shone like a beacon across the Ribble Valley, but following its demise he is now concentrating on this brasserie – and the change of emphasis appears to suit him. Occupying an attractive building on a leafy Preston square, the modern dining room oozes smart formality with its lilac colour schemes, glitzy bar, leather banquettes and contemporary lighting – although it also has an appealing, all-inclusive vibe. The kitchen focuses on British themes, with the odd French and Mediterranean riff for good measure – witness signature dishes such as black pudding with sweetbreads, bay leaf sauce and baked beans, char-grilled ‘roast’ chicken or braised beef with nettle risotto and Garstang Blue cheese fritters. Heathcote also couldn’t resist bringing his legendary bread-and-butter pudding with apricot espuma to Preston – people still travel miles for it.

Terrible and dissapointing - not worth the money
My partner and I experienced the ‘Lancashire Story’ taster menu. We arrived at 6pm on Saturday 21st March and were seated to the right, adjacent to the serving area, close to the kitchens, despite many tables being available. I went to the toilets and once I had returned the inclusive prosecco had been poured. My partner then nipped to the toilets, and on his return the first course had already been brought to the table, without us even being offered drinks. This was within five minutes of our arrival. The actual food itself was ok, although portion size was small. The courses kept coming, literally as soon as we had finished the first, the second arrived and so on. The overall feeling was that we were being rushed; all we could hear was clattering in the kitchens and chefs shouting orders to other kitchen staff such as ‘mains away’ and to the waiting on staff. The whole experience was stressful and not relaxing and we literally felt were ‘in the kitchen’ with the staff. We left the restaurant exactly 1 hour after arriving, leaving at 7pm. We felt like we were being rushed out, for them to set the table for a later booking. At the time of booking we were told by the lady that the experience would be relaxed and would last approximately 2 to 3 hours, unfortunately this was not the case. We had been very much looking forward to our visit and unfortunately we fell let down and disappointed. We certainly do not feel we can recommend Heathcotes to our friends or family. Overall we feel we did not received what we expected and the experience was not worth the money we feel the food overall is over rated. We wrote to complain about our experience, a lady called Jane contacted us from Heathcotes, to inform us that our comments had been taken on board and to offer a complimentary glass of prosecco, if we returned to Heathcotes. We will not be visiting the restaurant again unfortunately!!!
