SquareMeal Review of Scalini

Back in the day, Scalini was considered one of London’s ‘premier restaurants’, observes a reader – and crowds still flock to this long-serving, ultra-traditional Italian, despite rather ‘surly service’ and ‘astronomic prices’. A photographic wall of fame at the back of the pale, yellow-walled dining room testifies to its enduring popularity with celebs as well as locals and tourists, who come here for food that that is familiar, reassuring and resolutely old school. Apart from the odd the seasonal special, the menu rarely changes – so get your fill of baked avocado with crab and cheese sauce, tortellini with Gorgonzola, cream and asparagus, char-grilled lobster or calf’s liver with butter and sage. Like the menu, the wine list is Italian to the core, with the odd French vintage for good measure.

No wonder London had such a bad reputation
Back in the day this was considered one of the premier London restaurants, so I can only imagine how bad the others were. Service is attentive but surly! The food is OK but not inspired and the prices are astronomic ! Heaven knows why it was so busy!

Pros: The very friendly staff, the buzzy atmosphere and the nostalgic decoration Cons: Most of the food was fairly bland and RIDICULOUSLY overpriced. On top of paying for this privilege the tables are literally on top of each other. If i want excellent Italian food in this neighbourhood for this budget i would go to Zafferanos every day of the week over Scalini. Daphne's would be a second choice. I cannot see us bothering to try Scalini again.

What a pity. Even the great heritage of Scalini in Walton Street can make us forgive its current shortcomings. Let's hope they will in time be overcome. Like so many other “vintage” London Italian restaurants, Scalini has been resting on its laurels for quite some time. The food was not “bad” but notably mediocre and by current standards of inspired italian cooking in the capital. But the problem here is that there are so many so much better places close by. Let's hope that one day there's a revival in the kitchen. At the moment there is room for imporovement. However, there are glimmers of hope, I believe it would be a very good place for a private party…

I have been to Scalini several times and always had a very good experience. I've always found the food to be perfectly cooked and very flavoursome, huge portions too, and with a good selection of wines and a loud, fun, bustling atmosphere. The tables are close together, it can feel a little cramped at times, but generally very friendly and authentically Italian! Its definitely a place to go with friends rather than a romantic dinner. As other reviewers have said, the langoustines are delicious and there are a few things available ‘off menu’ so it pays to chat to your waiter, or even better, know them well! Overall a great restaurant and a firm favourite with my friends and I.
