SquareMeal Review of Zia Teresa

Faced with an unfamiliar gastronomic landscape, tourists scouring the streets around Harrods see this quirky Italian as a sure bet – which may explain why it’s always packed. Although it’s been around for half a century & shows signs of ageing, Zia Teresa’s decor still valiantly tries to create the illusion of dining alfresco: its vaulted ceiling is painted to resemble the sky, street lamps adorn the walls & the open kitchen has a tiled, sloping roof. Plus points include attentive service from waiters in skimpy turquoise waistcoats & a list of aromatic house specials such as veal with orange juice & almonds; otherwise, expect the usual trattoria fodder including lasagne, spinach & ricotta ravioli, mozzarella salads & pizzas, accompanied by heartfelt Latin pop & a professional, all-Italian wine list with detailed notes.

We often use Zia Teresa as a good excuse to leave our desks and have a nice lunch. The food never dissappoints and tastes like proper home cooking. The service is always good and friendly and the atmosphere buzzing with a mix of people who are either taking a break from their shopping or like us grabbing a light lunch before getting back to work. I will keep going back!

This is a good spot to stop when you need a little lunch pick-me-up after a busy morning shopping at The Cornershop over the road. Something slightly odd is going on with the decor (the outside/inside courtyard theme has been somewhat marred by the addition of an aircon unit on top of what would otherwise be a pagoda roof!) which hasn't been updated since the eighties, but that's a welcome relief from the bling bling outside. My tomato pasta was uneventful, but I blame myself for ordering the dullest thing on the menu; my boyfriend's carbonara was much tastier and the fried zucchini delicious. I wouldn't travel out of my way for this or come for an evening meal here, but it ticks all the boxes for lunch in the area: friendly service, down-to-earth atmosphere, reasonable prices (£15 a head for pasta with a shared side and a soft drink). It gets busy so be prepared to wait a few minutes.

The simplicity and retro charm of this place make it an absolute winner for me. So unexpected, sitting opposite Harrods. I totally expected far less and was pleasantly surprised.
