SquareMeal Review of The Blue Nile

Located above the Blues Café & Bar on Montpellier Parade, this curious little restaurant has carved out a quirky niche for itself by serving up authentic Egyptian dishes before the bands get going. The place itself is an unlikely mix of granny’s sitting room with touches of Cairo souk – think plump cushions and squishy sofas alongside carved wooden artefacts, lattice screens, rugs and ‘Casablanca’ murals, plus linen drapes over the ceiling. It makes an evocative setting for a short menu with bargain-basement prices but bang-on flavours – all courtesy of the Egyptian chef/proprietor. Start with the Blue Nile dip (mashed feta, tomatoes, olives and mint) plus some flatbread or try the stuffed vine leaves (mahshi), before moving on to a big helping of tagine gambary with oven-baked prawns, chicken fatta with bread, rice and yoghurt or one of the meaty kebabs. Booze is normally ferried from the bar downstairs.
