Launched in Islington back in 1995, Japanese Canteen was one of the first to bring izakaya-style canteen food to the capital – and it now has a chain of outlets across the city. Expect a rush and a scrum at lunchtime, with every seat and corner spot taken, queues out the door and the kitchen working at full tilt. Harrow Place is also the group’s development kitchen, so expect a rolling menu with lots of surprises – although all the staples are present and correct. Bento boxes loaded with everything from salmon teriyaki to highly rated katsu curries are top shouts, but also look for the signature KFC (Korean fried chicken), donburi rice bowls, ramen soups, plates of chilli rice and stir-fried noodles with all manner of additions. Unlicensed, but cans and juices do the trick.
