SquareMeal Review of Buddha-Bar

Bronze Award

“Full of people desperate to be seen”, this glitzy outpost of the acclaimed nightspot founded in Paris promises a similar blend of high-life vibes, pulsing world music and fashionably westernised pan-Asian cuisine. Spread over two floors, the interiors fuse colonial, baroque and oriental influences, with Swarovski crystal dragons, a huge Buddha in bronze mesh and a construction of 207 brass deities stretching up into the double-height ceiling. Try a killer cocktail and some nibbles in the seductive bar or go big in the restaurant where the menu runs from nigiri and maki rolls to Thai green papaya salad, Korean seafood soup, salmon teriyaki or Wagyu beef fillet with truffle butter. Also check out the Asian take on afternoon tea. Some feel it’s a case of style over substance, while the sight of bouncers on the door midweek should tell you everything you need to know.

Lovely food; overpriced wine
My wife and I plus our two daughters dined at the restaurant for the first time last night. We were a little concerned by some of the reviews that we'd seen, particularly about the quality of service, but it was fine without being exceptional. The cocktails were excellent, though a little over priced, even for Knightsbridge. The food was generally very good, although the chili salt baby squid was more batter than squid and a little overcooked. We took advantage of the current promotional offer of a 50% discount on the price of a la carte main dishes, but the service charge was calculate before discount which, whilst not a big difference, is the sort of practice which irritates. Our principal disappointment was the price of the wine. A bottle of Gavi de Gavi Broglia "La Meirana" has a retail price of c£14 a bottle; we were charged £78. I expect a mark up of 3x or even 4x in a top West End restaurant, but this was nearly 5x, which is outrageous! Also, whilst the wine list named the wine correctly, the bill incorrectly showed it as Bruno Broglia, which is an altogether superior wine with a retail price of c£19 a bottle!

Second Time Lucky!
The Buddah Bar is back in town. Having a soft spot for this, yes admittedly chain of high-end pan-Asian restaurants cum nightspots of at least as known for their collection of Lounge Music CDs as for their take on westernised Asian cooking. So one has to be very clear about what one sets out to do at the BB: it is not a competitor to the very authentic Japanese and south-east Asian restaurants in town. However, its second London incarnation opened in late 2012 is now in Knightsbridge, the first having been in a vault underneath a bridge on the Embankment (which was fun at the time, but with the benefit of hindsight possibly not the best idea…) and now it finally seems to be firing on all cylinders with good, if not unforgettable food, good service and and an atmosphere and interior that is in holding with BBs other global branches and compares very competitively with other London “party” restaurants. But as any place in this category it has to work for you. My view is that it is at least worth a try.

Buddha Bar
The bar was busy but the restaurant was a little quiet for a Thursday night. The wine list is slightly pricey but we had a really delicious south African Chenin Blanc, one of the best I've tasted. The menu is flexible, we ordered some sushi and tempura and once we'd finished that ordered some more tempura and some sashimi, all very tasty. We were the last to leave the restaurant but at no point felt pressured to do so. It's a bit pricey but probably just about worth it for the quality of food and drink.

Tasty / Trendy - expect the "Push"
Atmosphere and Food quality was unique and of good quality. Would be nice to be more transparent on the 2 1/2 hour table policy upfront , versus getting the rapid fire treatment once sitting. Table turning pressure dampens the experience . The overall atmosphere does liven and builds past 10.

Since it's reopening in Knightsbridge I've visited Buddha bar on three occasions. Once with friends, once on business and another on a date. Each time I've received a world-class premium service; enjoyed the vibrant and premium atmosphere and indulged in fine cuisine and cocktails. This is my favourite restaurant within a mile radius and I'm usually grumpy cynical punter. I would recommend Buddha Bar for any occasion…
