SquareMeal Review of Camino Monument

Bronze Award

‘Puerto del Canario’ sounds far more exotic than plain old ‘Canary Wharf’, and this little slice of Spain makes a good stab at letting the sunshine in. Camino’s ‘gorgeous’ waterside terrace is the place to be in high summer, while upended Tio Pepe barrels make a jaunty indoor perch on unavoidably English days. Road-trip tapas such as chicken livers with parsley salad, crispy squid with pungent alioli, or tortilla with just the right wobble arrive quickly for those on the go, while others linger with plates of scallops, chorizo and broad beans, or lamb rump with pea purée and baby onions from the charcoal grill. To drink, there are jugs of sangria, draught Estrella and numerous well-regarded Spanish wines, all served by energetic young staff. Funky sounds herald the end of the working week, and there’s brunch, too.

About

In Spanish culture, the tapas dining experience is all about enjoying the company of friends and family, having fun and visiting lively bars. Camino ticks all of these boxes. An authentic taste of Spanish cuisine is found at Camino's Monument site. A bright, rustic tapas bar located not far from the waterside makes for a lively, vibrant dining spot.

The Camino restaurants are co-ordinated by executive chef Nacho del Campo who brings his Vitoria roots to London through fresh, authentic ingredients in dishes that showcases his passion and creativity for Spanish cuisine. Sustainability is a huge part of the restaurant's ethos with sustainabily-sourced meat and an emphasis on recycling.

The tapas menu takes you on a journey through classic Spanish cuisine with ham croquetas, anchovy skewers and cheese fritters with Extramaduran sheep cheese taking pride of place in the first section of the menu. For meat-lovers, there is a great choice of cured and aged meats from Serrano ham to Iberico ham to spicy chorizo; pair this with some of the cheese selections like Manchega sheep cheese or smoked cow cheese from Cantabria for a beautiful Spanish feast.

Camino prioritises the Spanish culture of dining with friends and family through its selection of tapas dishes that are perfect to share alongside one of the wines from the extensive wine list. Choose between veggie, seafood and meat tapas or if you're in a group of eight or more, why not try the whole slow-roasted Segovian style suckling pig, although 48 hours notice is required to get that slow-roasted meat!

Finish off with some Spanish desserts that can be paired with a dessert wine or Spanish sherry to complement the sweet flavours. Enjoy all Camino has to offer in terms of food alongside their great array of drinks. With wines from all across Spain, cava, and cocktails showcasing Spanish liqueurs, Camino is certain to get you and your friends joining in with the vibrant, authentic atmosphere.

Terrible Service

We had a terrible experience at Camino.

The food took forever to come and multiple times they brought wrong orders. We had to notify them and at the end they charged us for something that we clearly told them that we did not order and sent it back! The manager at the bar rudely refused to believe that we did not order and finally accepted the refund. There were also some items that were missing from the original order. We tried to be understanding and consider that lunch time is a busy hour for this restaurant but this is absolutely unacceptable.

This was a terrible example of customer service. Specially when you work in the area and you recommend the place to others and this level of service is like a slap in the face for the money that you are paying.

Food is exceptional. Service is very good. Décor is good. Ambience is great, lively but at a level where you can talk. Value is good but could be quite expensive for a regular lunch although would be well worth it.

Good food and service but too noisy
I've been to Camino Monumento in the evenings in the past for a catch-up dinner with friends. I was surprised last visit at how noisy it has become. The music, which was really for those in the bar, became louder as the evening progressed so it became impossible to hold a conversation with my friend without shouting. Everyone was shouting to be heard. It would appear that the restaurant is pushing the bar side of the venue rather than the restaurant in evenings and therefore diners are suffering. I won't return in the evenings as it became unpleasant. Shame as the food and service are very good

Dinner
A very lively atmosphere for a Tuesday evening but the service was still good. I was accidentally overcharged for a bottle of wine, but otherwise good evening.

Lunch started quietly just after 12 with the large space almost completely empty- it picked up between 1 and 2pm. Service throughout was friendly and efficient. Food was very good- particularly enjoyed the baked noodle dish (Fiduea)- would order again. The cocktails we had (smoky vodka martini's) which in the West End outlet featured smoky jamon on a cocktail stick (and a much more “smoky” flavour) were something of a disappointment here- two olives, no ham, virtually no smokiness- all novelty dissipated. Very nice vodka martini, but the kind you can get anywhere. Had coffees at an outside table to accommodate the smoker, but the view onto Mincing Lane is a bit grey and uninspiring- shame really, it's a place screaming for a lovely green terrace on which to drink sangria! Overall an enjoyable lunch. Will be back!
