SquareMeal Review of Wenlock and Essex

Islington’s party crowd loves this cavernous circus of a venue. A multitude of bulbs twinkle down from the ornate red & gold ceiling on to Chesterfield sofas & scattered wooden tables, & at weekends, the naughty neon ‘Satan’s Circus’ club hosts regular comedy, DJ sets & live music. The W&E is more about fun than food, though you can order Saturday brunch (perhaps pancake with caramelised banana, crispy bacon, maple syrup & fruit compote), Sunday lunch, & a small batch of bar snacks, sandwiches & more substantial meals during the week. Cocktails & wine are available, but beer drinkers are the best served. The pub has links to the Camden Town Brewery, so in addition to interesting bottled beers (Estrella Damm, Blue Moon, Negra Modelo), there’s Camden Hells, Pale Ale & Wheat Beer on tap.

Rude and dismissive management and staff
Absolutely worst service ever. Horrible and arrogant waiters who avoided responsibility and treated us awfully. When their poor language and treatment was called up they responded by calling us tw*ts. Avoid at all costs

I came to Wenlock & Essex on Saturday afternoon and had an excellent meal. The menu had just been changed according to the staff and the food was a real delight. Polenta chips and a small duck salad were a perfect starter for me and my wife (who is wheat intolerant) and then the meatballs and fish and chips really hit the spot! The meatball were moist and spicy with lashings of delicious tomato sauce and my wife really enjoyed the beer battered haddock. We started off the meal with a couple of bloody marys and then moved on to the wine-really great to see a British venue serving a top class Californian Merlot! All in all a cracking meal, even if the somewhat eclectic interior design isn't to everyone's taste—we loved it all!
