Over the past 30 years, Slug & Lettuce has built up an 80-strong nationwide chain. Recently, money has been spent updating its branches’ decor – as can be seen at this busy City Slug with its loud, colourful jazzed-up interior. Loud, too, are the thumping house and pop anthems, the pink neon ‘cocktails’ sign, and the squealing crowd of office juniors. The promised cocktails are legion if not necessarily aimed at the high-brow – Woo Woo, vodka Cherry Cola, Screaming Orgasm. Aperol Spritz is about as sophisticated as it gets. Nor, at £9.70 for ‘Kir Royal’ (made with Prosecco, not Champagne) are they particularly cheap. Fortunately, this chain is big on promo deals that see a bottle of house wine costing around the same as a packet of fags. Food is moderately priced and the massive menu – chicken tikka masala, nachos, scampi, veggie burgers – could be described as ‘Deliveroo’s most requested’.
