For something rather more fortifying than Christ Church Spitalfields’ communion wine, head next door to sample good grape at devilishly enticing prices. Open from 11am until as late as 1am at weekends, Blessing’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and ‘everything in between’. The operation is ranged over three floors of a Georgian house, with DJ sets played in the cellar bar, and kick-back sofas and a working fire upstairs. The main ground-floor room is a cafe-diner whose unpretentious interior – washed brick, prints, stripy narrow banquette and black-and-white tiled floor – harks back to wine bars from when Cilla Black was young. Order fry-ups and eggy bruncheons, hearty soups, croques, crêpes, beef pie (£6.50), zingy salads, fishcakes or pasta plates (there’s plenty to interest vegetarians). Drink Aperol spritz and classic cocktails while relaxing at pavement tables or on a small decked terrace overlooking the church. A regular quiz night is keenly contested.
