Yes, it’s the restaurant beneath West End nightclub Dstrkt, but this sophisticated hidden gem is not to be dismissed. The open plan, split-level room is laid out beneath an installation of glowing discs, casting soft blue light across a decor of dark woods and leathers. Yoshiaki’s menu is Nikkei (a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian cuisine), ranging from salads, ceviches and sushi to tacos, steamed buns and crispy duck rolls. Presentation is appropriately sharp: the dragon maki rolls we ordered arrived gleaming with dark soy sauce and liberally filled with eel and avocado; sashimi platters are served on a bed of ice and framed by bright green leaves. The neighbouring lounge is a late-night bonus, serving a small menu including sliders and maki rolls until 2am, while service on our visit was smart and professional. Surprisingly, given the main thrust of Dstrkt, our cocktails were distinctly average, with their whopping price tags mirrored on the food side. These points aside, Yoshiaki’s the place for a discreet, cool and tasty rendezvous.
