SquareMeal Review of Loch Fyne St Albans

Loch Fyne bucks the trend among national chains by offering a food & wine experience well above its high-street station. Selections from its recent menus such as hake with samphire, smoked salmon ‘sashimi-style’ with wasabi & soy, or ‘bradan rost’ with couscous salad, mango & coriander are dishes you might expect in flash big-city eateries – not in simply attired, accessible town-centre restaurants where ‘the food is reasonably priced & generously served’. This chain also caters for more traditional tastes, witness whitebait, mackerel pâté, fish & chips or fisherman’s pie alongside the group’s raison d’être – sustainably sourced oysters, mussels & langoustines from Loch Fyne itself. Most of the globetrotting wine list is available by the glass, with credible, fish-friendly pours including Albariño & Grüner Veltliner.

could have been so much better
My husband & I went to the loch fyne restaurant for lunch to celebrate our anniversary. We had heard great things about it and were expecting an excellent experience. This restaurant cannot be faulted for either service, atmosphere or presentation. We were however, disappointed that both our main courses were overcooked. On this occasion, I did not want to complain as I felt it would spoil our day. We will be trying it out again someday, but will most likely choose the set menu so as not to spend so much and then be disappointed.
