Cristian and Linda Barrionuevo already own restaurants in Sweden and Uruguay, as well as Argentinian steakhouse Mingo, but this new City tapas joint in Mingo’s basement sticks firmly to an Iberian repertoire. Carmona is named after a bar run by Cristian’s great uncle in León almost 70 years ago. It’s a congenial little place with seating on bright blue banquettes, vibrant yellow bar stools or plain wooden chairs. The decent choice of tapas pushes no gastronomic envelopes, but traditional snacks – albóndigas, tortilla, calamares a la Andaluza – are augmented by a few dishes with a north-western flavour. Try the classic pulpo a la Gallega, or the Padrón peppers. Paellas for a minimum of two diners satisfy more substantial needs, while the selection of cocktails provides an alternative to a Spanish wine list that includes a tasty Gran Fabián Albariño white. Finish with a postre of tarta de Santiago.
