SquareMeal Review of 190 Queen's Gate

Bronze Award

There’s no doubting that the bistro attached to 190 Queens Gate looks handsome with framed pictures galore, an ostentatious chandelier and plain bentwood chairs creating a pleasing overall effect. Similarly, the menu is sprinkled with perky Anglo-European flavours, although some feel the food is “stuck in a 1990s time warp”. Portions are “on the small side”, but readers have found plenty to enjoy – from thick cauliflower velouté with pickled purple cauliflower via roast partridge breast with confit legs, tangy red cabbage and chestnuts to prettily presented desserts including raspberry cheesecake. The hotel’s global wine list is a point of pride, with broad coverage and plenty of fine selections by the glass. You can also depend on polite service and decently priced set deals tailored to curtain-up at the nearby Royal Albert Hall – although the room can seem “dead” at other times.

About

190 Queen’s Gate is an all-day dining restaurant located within The Gore boutique hotel serving traditional British cuisine elevated with a modern twist. Located just a stone's throw from the Royal Albert Hall and boasting an excellent value pre-theatre dinner menu, this is the perfect destination to start your evening out. Head chef Frederick Forster, who also appeared on Celebrity MasterChef in 2022, has curated the menu and describes his dishes as ‘a complete journey through the authentic tastes of contemporary Britain’. Guests are invited to relax in the classically decorated dining room, featuring oak panelled walls and a stunning chandelier.

The restaurant prides itself on sourcing the finest produce from excellent suppliers. Indulge in hearty dishes like the 8oz aged sirloin steak with bearnaise sauce and onion rings, or the braised lamb shepherd's pie. Lighter options include cold poached salmon served with cucumber, dill mayonnaise and new potatoes and a classic Caesar salad.

190 Queen’s Gate also serves a killer breakfast menu, including a range of hot and cold options. Alongside a classic continental breakfast, choose from the likes of a full English breakfast, eggs royale and slow-cooked mushrooms on toast with a poached egg and parmesan.

To accompany your meal, the international wine list features rare bottles sourced from trusted vineyards across the globe, many of which are available by the glass. There is also a creative cocktail list and a particularly impressive selection of gin and tonics. If you don’t fancy a full sit-down meal, why not head to the adjoining Bar 190, where the launch party for the Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet was held, for a nibble and a drink?

The pre-theatre menu allows diners to choose between two or three courses and features refined dishes such as courgette fritters with a goat's cheese dressing, and roasted chalk stream trout with brown shrimp and caper butter.
