SquareMeal Review of Howies Waterloo Place

Although owner Davie Howie Scott sold this likeable Edinburgh-based restaurant group back in 2006, he was so fond of the idea that he brought it back and re-launched it in 2011. This branch occupies an elegant Georgian edifice built to mark the Battle of Waterloo, with a light, airy interior and a menu that aims for honest value with Scottish and European influences underpinning the line-up of bistro-style dishes. Expect the likes of Cullen skink, haggis with neeps and tatties, burgers and lobsters alongside warm wood pigeon salad, macaroni cheese or herb-crusted Loch Duart salmon with samphire and beurre blanc, plus sticky toffee pudding for afters. The menu also has some thoughtful vegetarian options, while excellent service and terrific lunchtime deals seal the deal. Howie’s has a workmanlike wine list, but you can also BYO (£4 corkage).
