SquareMeal Review of Luc's Brasserie

Silver Award

Luc’s is as committedly French as Leadenhall Market is charmingly English, but the laid-back appeal of both market and bistro makes them natural companions.

Above the ornate shopping arcades, Luc’s zinc-topped bar and Parisian prints conjure a “bustling atmosphere” that’s enhanced by close-quarters seating and a fragrant trail of garlicky snails and baked Camembert.

Uncomplicated but carefully handled mains might include roast hake with pancetta and sauce vierge, entrecôte steak (“very good”) or Toulouse sausage with Puy lentil broth, while tuna niçoise is “excellent for a lighter lunch”.

Capable staff help to make the experience a “pleasant” one – something to be valued just as much as the useful prix-fixe and blowsy puddings (try the îles flottantes scattered with pink praline).

The wine list, put together with help from respected supplier Le Caves des Pyrene, is an all-French affair with the focus on small producers and regional gems.

Delicious food and a good atmosphere in the space. Service was dismissive though - got several aspects of the order wrong without apology, inattentive and brusque.

Enjoyable dining experience

Very nice atmosphere/deco for an informal dinner z casual but not too casual dining. Good service, and can clearly see that care and attention is taken over quality of the food and drink

Lovely luncheon to take a client
We had the set 3 course luncheon menu which was around £20 for three courses - so excellent value. And having eaten said lunch; absolutely no stinting on the quality of the food. It was really just great!. Served very nicely by the sommelier who made a very good recommendation for wine actually cheaper than I had originally decided. That alone is worth a repeat visit. Thank you. There were two minor irritations. firstly they liked to pout the wine for you. I have always found this disruptive and they were more than happy to leave us be and secondly we were charged for bread. And an automatic service charge too! Having said that would still go back. Great time.

I adore this place, French bistro meets charming English. The decor conjures a "bustling atmosphere" enhanced by close seating and the fragrance of garlic and baked Camembert. It's reasonably priced for the location, situation right in the heart of Leadenhall Market.

Lunch
This continues to be consistently good food, service and atmosphere of a bustling French brasserie. The tuna nicoise is excellent as a lighter lunch and the steak is also very good.

The service here is commendable considering how busy the place was, and the food was of a very good standard. The stairs are always an interesting challenge.

Always delivers...
Luc's always serves up what it says - good fresh quality brasserie food. You won't be disappointed. Always well prepared, nicely presented (the duck egg and asparagus salad was both a joy to behold and delicious) this is tasty, straightforward French cuisine - think onion soup, garlic snails, baked Camembert for starters followed by such delicacies as duck confit, poulet roti, steak tartare for mains, not to mention the usual selection of steaks including the very French cut, onglet. One small gripe - the wine list. Whilst there is a reasonable selection on offer, it is mostly overpriced and not particularly exciting. By all means stick to French wines but Luc's needs to be more adventurous and cater rather more for all oenological pockets and tastes.

It's worth the climb, a great discovery
Working in London I have often gone to Chamberlain's restaurant (great fish btw) but fancied a change. Luc's is right next door found up the stairs through a small entranceway. It was early evening so very quiet, and as a result we had great friendly service from a small team who were very attentive. We had the soup starter from the specials and a great steak (steak seems to be the house speciality). The menu had just the right number of options and the wine list was good (a lovely Gigondas for us!). The surroundings were great, best described as simple charm, a hint of history and a great view from a window seat down to the covered marketplace below. I'm going back soon!

Nice City Lunch
We visited this restaurant based on the rating and we were not disappointed. It's a lovely place in historic Leadenhall Market. We were a group of seven including some picky eaters, but everyone was delighted with the tasting menu. The waitress was great and definitely added to the experience. The lunch was a great success. If you are visiting City of London, you must book a table here.

This restaurant has long been a favourite of City types for lunch. It now also opens for dinner and that is what took us to the restaurant. Sadly it was certainly not very full for a Thursday evening, it deserves to do better. Both food and service were very good. 2 of us had the fillet steak, complete with excellent frites. It was as good, if not better, than some of competition who tend to specialise more in this type of meal. As I recall from the past, my friend who had the sole remarked that it was prepared and cooked perfectly. The fourth member of our party opted for a casserole with assorted meat and game that would most certainly have represented a vegetarian's nightmare. We opted for a bottle of the house red wine which was very drinkable and complemented the dishes well, even the fish. A return visit is on the cards before too long.
