SquareMeal Review of Gilbey’s Old Amersham

Bronze Award

Crammed-in bistro tables and printed menus have replaced desks and blackboards at this sibling of Gilbey’s Eton, housed in the shell of Dr Challoner’s 17th-century grammar school. A lovely sheltered courtyard fills up quickly when the sun peeps out, while the beamed dining room has a real local buzz with colourful artwork on the walls and a “very reliable” repertoire of vibrant modern food at very fair prices. Come here for duck liver parfait brûlée with kumquat compote or tandoori-spied monkfish with smoked oyster mousse followed by noisette and breast of Cornish lamb with compressed tomatoes, broad beans, girolles and parsley root or fillet of stone bass with linguine, samphire, baby fennel and lemony dill emulsion, with, perhaps, lemon tart or dark chocolate and mango delice to finish. The Gilbey family are also importers of French wines, so expect plenty of decent stuff on their carefully chosen list. Engaging staff also get full marks for their “friendly service”.

Disappointing

We were given a table in the corner which was so small the cutlery couldn’t be laid out in the normal way.  Service was poor, we waited fifteen minutes before anyone asked what we would like.  Ordered a gin and tonic which took a while to arrive and was immediately followed by my starter.  Food was generally average.

Excellent cooking, beautifully designed interior

Firstly, not sure why the ‘crammed in tables’ features first here!? It’s an old, beautiful building that is well thought-out, and they seem to have maximised the space provided by such a building. Wooden beams, low ceilings and brick could make it feel compact, but a gorgeous sunshine yellow paint on the walls certainly brightens and makes a clever use of space!

Food is on par with some of the best restaurants we’ve visited. Always an interesting menu, varied and seasonal. Cooking is also top notch and sensitive to the ingredients. We had the smoked haddock starter and the lamb rump for Main. Both with perfect accompaniments, both executed to perfection! Lamb was tender and perfectly pink!

A rich chocolate Delice to finish and a very interesting cheese board finished a perfect meal.

Wine list is very good, with great notes to help newbies like us through!

Overall? Excellent, service was a little ‘amateur’ in some places but don’t let that put you off!

Book in advance, you’ll need to!!
