SquareMeal Review of Champany Inn

This grandly appointed restaurant with rooms, some 20 minutes west of Edinburgh, is made up of a cluster of old farm buildings, some dating back to the time of Mary, Queen of Scots, to which a modern wing of smart bedrooms has been added. Clive Davidson’s menu has changed little over the years, being dedicated mainly to beef: brilliantly flavoured, aged Aberdeen Angus is served in a variety of cuts – sirloin, rib-eye, porterhouse, popeseye or chateaubriand – all prepared to order on a specially designed char-grill & served with a choice of sauces. Starters celebrate more of Scotland’s finest produce, such as Loch Gruinart oysters, fresh lobster & hot-smoked salmon. There’s also an impressive, if pricey, wine list. The no-bookings Chop & Ale House across a converted farmyard from the main restaurant is a more casual operation, offering thick Aberdeen Angus burgers, steaks, tender lamb chops & fish & chips.

Without doubt the best steak restaurant in Britain – forget any of the london pretenders, this is the real deal. Have been eating here for more than 15 years and the quality has never faltered or the service or the warmth of the welcome from Anne Davidson, and the best South African wine list in the UK just gets better! However the food isn't cheap , reckon on £40 for your lump of meat, but what a lump. It will cover your plate and will make you wonder why anyone would ever consider being a vegetarian. And if you don't like meat (like my wife who still thinks this is her favourite restaurant in Scotland) then there is some lovely fresh fish, excellent vegetables and superb pudiings. Idiosyncratic, never bothered by fashion, a kitsch room to eat in – a circular byre, dubious old pictres on the walls, lots of highly polished silver and glass and a lively atmosphere, all in all a great experience and deserving of a Michelin star… Dont miss out on the rooms either – they are great value, good size, spotless and power showers to kock you out. But above all a welcomeing half bottle of chilled champage in your room on the first night and complimentary G&Ts or whisky for the rest of your stay. This is delighting customers and all for about £130 per night with breakfast included.
