While Quilon is a Michelin-starred Indian destination, the adjoining Q Bar plies its trade as a more relaxed drop-in for drinks, meetings, conversation and spicy snacks (semolina chips, chilli yoghurt chicken strips, crispy silver fish). It’s a good looker, echoing the handsome decor of the restaurant with rich fabrics, bronze fittings and flickering tea lights. Sink into one of the plush armchairs and examine the extensive drinks list with its carefully chosen wines and specialist beers from Corsica, India, San Francisco and beyond. Also wave the flag for patriotic entries including Cornish-brewed Chalky’s Bark – a spicy, bottle-aged ale named after Rick Stein’s late dog. There’s a 50-strong whisky list, too, while cocktails span everything from a tamarind-spiked margarita and green-chilli Qojito to bittor – a blend of Grand Marnier, Amaretto, Angostura 1919 and lime.
