SquareMeal Review of Din Tai Fung Centre Point

It doesn’t get much more exciting than a restaurant run by programmed robot waiters, does it? Din Tai Fung’s Centrepoint restaurant harnesses the powers of modern technology, as well as a natty spot right outside newly-renovated Tottenham Court Road station. Lifted up above street level, you get a fantastic view of the buzz outside through glass walls on either side of the restaurant. Inside, the restaurant isn’t bad either - all blush pinks, trailing plants and gold accents.

We began with a selection of appetisers - crispy chicken, pickled cucumber, sauteed green beans with pork and shrimp, oriental salad, and short ribs. The chicken easily reigned supreme thanks to soft, juicy meat encased in a perfectly tangy coating.

A visit to Din Tai Fung is really all about the dumplings, and no trip is complete without ordering a boatload of those famous xiao long bao. It’s easy to see why they’re so beloved; the brothy soup dumplings are bursting with flavour, but they’re still a thing of delicate, hand-crafted beauty.

Following these, we were treated to a selection of small plates. Wontons were decent enough but were overshadowed by a crisp prawn pancake, with generous, meaty prawn filling. Similarly with the desserts, the classics far outshone the newer menu, lesser-known menu items. Dessert dumplings filled with dark chocolate lava did a job, but they didn’t come close to salted egg yolk custard buns, which we fought over to the last morsel. Biting into the soft fluffy bun, a hot, salty, indulgent custard comes oozing out in a perfectly instagrammable, slow-motion way.

While some small plates let the menu down slightly, Din Tai Fung is still incredibly satisfying and certainly worth the novelty value. Our advice is to stick to the tried-and-tested classic and in any case, the trip is worth making just for the robots.

About

The opening of Din Tai Fung’s first London instalment has become the stuff of legend throughout the city, with rumours of four- or five-hour long queues circulating regularly. It’s not hard to see why; this dumpling chain is the largest in the world with over 160 sites worldwide with Michelin stars awarded to the Hong Kong and Macau branches. Now the renowned brand is set to launch its third London site in Centre Point.

This move is said to have been in the works since 2019. Since then, Din Tai Fung has already opened another branch in Covent Garden, but have now confirmed that the Centre Point site will be opening in September 2022, just in time for the 60th anniversary of Centre Point itself. Located above the Arcade Food Hall a stone’s throw from Tottenham Court Road station, this prime location is sure to drive traffic towards this already immensely popular restaurant.

The obvious star of the show here is the xiao long bao, available with steamed chilli crab, pork and vegetable jiao zi, as well as vegan and vegetarian options. The dumplings go through royal treatment, with 40 minutes of hand preparation devoted to each one and a different chef at each stage of the preparation process, all of whom have undergone up to six months of training. A minimum of 18 folds are added before the buns are steamed and served, hot and fresh, to salivating customers.

The new Centre Point site will see some interesting features. A separate bar area will be installed where guests can enjoy the range of signature Din Tai Fung cocktails. As with the Selfridges site, food will be served by adorable little robots, who spin around the restaurant with wide eyes and smiles on their faces.

It remains to be seen whether the Centre Point venue will attract a four-hour queue, but one thing’s for sure: Din Tai Fung is a smash hit wherever it goes.

Owing to this location's deteriorating quality as of late, I have been wary of dining in but decided to give the restaurant a second chance by ordering take away. As a person with a gluten allergy, I asked the staff to remove gluten from the dishes. The manager not only insisted that they could not accommodate my request, but that they also could not cancel the order on UberEats, and so I decided to cancel it from my end after they continued to feign ignorance. Little did I know that they had the full power to cancel my order, which would have given me a full refund: instead, I was still charged 90% of the order that ultimately went to the restaurant. The manager should be ashamed on their behavior and I urge any potential patron to dine at any of the plethora of Chinese Restaurants for a guaranteed better experience.
