SquareMeal Review of The George - Ashbourne

A pretty, stone-built 18th-century pub perched on a picture-perfect village green. Inside are jugs of fresh flowers, candles & soft jazz playing the background, as well as pints of Burton Bitter in the quarry-tiled snug in front of a roaring fire. At the helm is Emily Hammond, the third generation of her family to run the place. Simply cooked dishes made from locally sourced produce deliver smoked haddock stovies with a poached egg or Ashbourne mushroom & roast vegetable Wellington, alongside roast duck breast with rissolé potatoes, haricot bean casserole & kale. To finish, perhaps spotted dick with honeyed figs & custard. Tables & chairs are set up under the old oak tree, & there’s a farm shop across the yard selling local organic meat & veg, home-cured bacon & artisan bread.
