SquareMeal Review of Wagamama Old Broad Street

Credited with bringing the Japanese noodle bar into the mainstream, Wagamama still does exactly what it says on the tin. The menu is dominated by noodles – mostly wok-fried or in broth – & portions are generous throughout. It’s not expensive, either: classic yaki soba, a heaped, glistening plate of wheat noodles tossed with shrimp, chicken, sprouts, scallions, & pink slivers of Japanese pickle, weighs in at a mere £7.60. Mains represent the best value for the hard-up, but for flavour & innovation make room for sides & puddings. A newish dish of glazed chicken wings is a savoury, sticky, smoky treat, while the creamy cheesecake topped with tart Japanese cherries – also new to the menu – is a terrific way to end a meal. Seating is at long, communal tables & service is efficient – too efficient for some, who find the practice of delivering dishes in no particular order an irritation.

You get what you come for – decent, good quality food with fairly quick delivery (and a much better option than your regular junk fast food). Either eat-in (albeit with a bit of a cantene feel to it) or take away

What can I say – food is perfect always, served within 10 minutes and very cheap. If you don't mind sitting on a hard wooden bench in a row then I would highly recommend it. I have no negative comments about this restaurant chain (they even took out the onions from my dish upon my request)

Quality beginning to vary as Wagamama becomes a tired experience. The days of feeling it was a value option for good fusion food are gone. A quick snack of Edamame beans and Chicken Chilli Men goes down well enough but one in ten the quality is poor so the experience becomes pointless. “Starters” are now expensive. “Mains” are solid.
