SquareMeal Review of The Lion at Settle

This grand old coaching inn has been keeping travellers, farmers and walkers fed and watered for 200 years, and following major refurbishment is poised to do the same for their 21st-century counterparts. Gone are the floral carpets and flock wallpaper, but lots of original features remain, including the stunning inglenook fireplace and elegant sweeping staircase. Take your pick from half a dozen cask ales and a good range of wines by the glass. A menu featuring local produce puts the emphasis on comfort: Settle pudding (with a suet lid and meltingly tender beef filling) and homemade Scotch eggs with Mr Vikki’s chilli jam are proper rib-stickers, while tempura prawns hit a lighter note. Many dishes offer stonkingly good value, including classics such as a bacon chop with free-range egg and fat chips. It’s official: the Lion has returned with a roar.
