SquareMeal Review of Yumenoki

Yumenoki doesn’t go in for flash, big-city minimalism, but its dressed-down canteen surrounds & lack of ceremony allow it to deliver genuine, expertly made sushi at very realistic prices. The menu will have Japanese fans purring, with everything from gyoza dumplings to udon noodles & beef teriyaki on offer – although raw morsels are undoubtedly the star attractions. The sea-urchin nigiri, Californian maki sets & squid sashimi are all worth sampling, or you can put yourself in the chefs’ hands with a 20-piece sharing platter for £30. Meanwhile, those who daren’t leave their desks for too long can take advantage of the superb, eight-piece bento boxes (£8). Flasks of hot & cold saké, potent shochu & Asahi beer all present plenty of opportunities for some native drinking.

Short but well delivered menu with mix of bento, sushi and noodle dishes. Lacks atmosphere but is well run

I love Japanese food. It is clean, healthy, tasty but can be quite pricey. Yumenoki does what many others fail to do. Consistently serve up great food at a good price. It is not the prettiest of restaurants, but it's not bad. A few japanese wall hangings and some ok tables and chairs. There is a downstairs as well which is a little more authentic. This is my Japanese canteen, I go there midweek for Take-aways, on the weekend with the Mrs and whenever I feel like good food. It does not try to do anything fancy and does not try to do any Nobu-esque dishes like most other Japanese poseurs do in London town (you know who I mean, Mr Feng-Sushi) It beats most others hands down on price. There is a very nice lady that runs it, she is always very friendly and welcoming. Service can occasionally be a tad slow, but who cares. Don't be fooled and get you food from Feng-Sushi a few doors along – Go to Yumenoki and get some proper food.
