SquareMeal Review of The Wally Dug

The reason for the name is lost in proverbial the mists of time, but a ‘wally dug’ was a china dog in old parlance. Whatever the explanation, this tiny, but hugely characterful boozer has been a drinking establishment since at least 1811, and is the place to go if you fancy a quiet pint in the New Town – just beware the hordes of loud-mouthed, rugby-shirted students during term time. With its tiny bar, small back room (complete with Wii) and even smaller snug, the place would be busy if it had more than 30 people in it, and often feels like an old man’s boozer full of young bucks. Still, it’s one of the few pubs hereabouts where you can get away from televised football when there’s a big game on.
