Glamourous Chinese Restaurant (Wing Yip Business Centre, Oldham Road, Ancoats, Manchester, Merseyside & Lancs, M4 5HU) For dim sum this is probably the best in Manchester, the trolley service adds to the Hong Kong style authenticity.

Marco (Chelsea Football Club, Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road, London, SW6 1HS) On the whole jolly good, but the service, which was impeccable, was a little let down by the menu. The menu for me was a little brief and tended towards a brassiere where the service tended toward that of a stared restaurant.

One wonders quite what input Marco has on the made over Lanes, besides the new menu and few clichéd pictures of him around the place. That said, it worked on me as I went on the back of the new branding. Very much on simple done well ethos, with an emphasis on steaks, the food was jolly good; and as steak dinners go, I’d be happy to go either here or Gaucho. The service on the whole was good, but a bit of a wobble at the start, as 2 tables (of 5) arrived at the same time and despite being outnumbered by staff, no one seemed to know where to put me; but to be fair I’m nit picking at that. The place deserves to be busier, and a makes for a good place for a business lunch.

Road Hole Grill (Old Course Hotel, St Andrews, Fife, Central Scotland, KY16 9SP) Half empty on Valentine’s night, didn’t bode well for this restaurant; but the tasting menu and the accompanying sommelier’s selection was worth of Michelin attention. It’s a shame that the sporadic service let the whole experience down; whilst good and friendly, those finer touched were sadly missing; for example, some course were introduced whilst others you only heard a distant ‘enjoy’ as the waitress scuttled off.

The Grill at The Dorchester (The Dorchester, 53 Park Lane, London, London, W1K 1QA) The interior designer must have been told Robbie Burns not Aiden Byrne when they came up with the interior which is more befitting the Braveheart set than a restaurant. That said though, the food was exemplary, the service friendly and efficient, won’t be long before he get a Michelin star again.

Mint Leaf Lounge (12 Angel Court, London, EC2R 7HB) A good curry, not to heavy and nice and delicate spices. However, the nan breads are of the size more suited to a dolls tea party and cost £5, twice the price of their sister restaurant. Cobra, £5 for a small bottle, made for an expensive night. The shouting over the loud bar area also makes for a less than convivial evening.

Hix Oyster & Chop House (36-37 Greenhill Rents, London, London, EC1M 6BN) Keeps to Hix's magic formula, simple food done well. The best pork scratchings ever too. Despite observations to the contrary the service was efficient and attentive, although did wane a little as it got busier.
