Brasserie Blanc Covent Garden (35 The Market, London, London, WC2E 8RF ‏)

Brasserie Blanc has recently taken over the Chez Gerard restaurant in the amazing venue at the top of Covent Garden. As local residents we were very excited at the thought of a new restaurant take over from Chez Gerard which was appalling! I am so disappointed to say that last night was equally as bad as the ‘old Chez Gerard days’. The food was extremely basic and the sharing platter for 2 people was tiny. I had mussels which were over cooked and the steak verged on inedible. I think the service would have been better if they had had any food coming up from the kitchen to serve. We had to permanently ask for more wine (we were drinking quickly so you would have thought that they would have noticed this and been prepared) and had to ask 3 times for the coffee that we had ordered and 4 times for the bill. The first Irish coffee that they served had no whisky in it…

All in all, a poor effort which is such a shame as it really is the most amazing venue. Raymond Blanc you need to get your finger out – we will not be returning!

Galvin at Windows (London Hilton, 22 Park Lane, London, London, W1K 1BE)

I was taken here as a surprise dinner and it was fantastic. We had the degustation menu deluxe which included the wines with each course. They were very accommodating with a change to one of the courses that I cant eat. The wines were excteptional and at exactly e right temperature. On a Saturday night it had a very buzzy atmosphere and we were moved to a window table after an hour or so (you can't reserve the window tables as it is first come first served) so the view was fascinating. I would highly recommend is as a treat like I had!

Bedford & Strand (1a Bedford Street, London, WC2E 9HH)

I love this place!
The wine list is very good and reasonably priced. The menu is tantalising and the food is delicious. When we went we had outstanding service.
It is a real hidden gem.

We have since visited the restaurant – A friend and I turned up on Saturday night for a 7.30 reservation for two that I had made on the internet. When we arrived, the restaurant was closed due to a private party.

The manager was very kind and apologetic, rang a neighbouring restaurant (gave us a glass of champers while we waited) and, all in all, dealt with the situation in a wonderful way.

I am so ashamed to say that when I got home and checked the booking, he was, of course, correct and I had made it for the wrong date. I come to the B&S on a regular basis and this has only reaffirmed my excellent opinion!

Roussillon (16 St Barnabas Street, London, London, SW1W 8PE)

We were taken here as a treat by some friends on a Saturday night. We arrived before them and wanted to buy the champagne in advance of our friends' arrival. This was an up hill struggle. In the end we managed it but only to discover the next day that they had charged our friends too!

It was a Saturday night and there were only 3 tables occupied. Over the evening these emptied so that by nine thirty it was just us which is incredible on a Saturday. this also meant that there was no buzz and no atmospere.

We all had the tasting menu and I have to say that the portions were miniscule. We regularly choose tasting menus so we are used to the small sizes, which is the whole point, but this was rediculous. I am a light eater and I managed all 7 courses plus a bread roll, plus an extra cheese course and the chocolates with the coffee!

The service was ok. Nothing special but the double charge of the champagne is a big no no.

also one last, very small point, the ladies toilet smelt of damp!

I dont think we will be returning.

Foxtrot Oscar (79 Royal Hospital Road, London, SW3 4HN)

I am stunned by the good reviews for this restaurant!

We have just returned from a week day work lunch. It was extremely disappointing. We were the only 8 people in there at first which should have guaranteed good food. The service, we have to say, was excellent as was the wine and wine list. My soup was cold and the croutons were soggy underneath which shows they had been sitting in the soup for some time. The beef was very tender but again cold. The goujons were very average and it was commented that they could have been pre-frozen they were so ‘ordinary’. My colleagues had fish served with a cold poached egg and the pork belly was tough and also cold. The risotto was excellent, apparently.

All in all we had a nice lunch as it was a rare outing for our department but we were bitterly disappointed. By the way we did not complain at the time as we were short of time and our boss was paying which would have been awkward.

Restaurant Critic

Terroirs (5 William Street, London, WC2N 4DW)

We went for a quiet Monday night dinner. We ate in the downstairs restaurant which was very atmospheric and cosy. The food was excellent with lots of charcuterie and French salads. I described to the waiter the sort of wine I fancied and his recommendation was fantastic and at £23 a bottle not bad value. The only tiny gripe I had was that there were anchovies on the menu upstairs but I wasn't allowed to order them downstairs. A very small thing which was never going to drag down a fantastic evening.

Clos Maggiore (33 King Street, London, London, WC2E 8JD)

I found Clos Maggiore on the Square Meal under ‘romantic’ and it really is. In the winter it is very cosy with a fire in the conservatory.
We went with two friends and had a wonderful evening. We had the vegetarian tasting menu and went for the option that included wine with each course. The Sommelier was very helpful and gave us a couple of different wines to choose as we went through the menu. The food was absolutely divine and the accompanying wines were perfect. It is a bit pricey but would not hesitate to go back.
Excellent!

Bar Boulud at the Mandarin Oriental (Mandarin Oriental, 66 Knightsbridge, London, London, SW1X 7LA)

it was my first visit to Bar Boulud and I took a business client for a work dinner. There are quite simply hundreds of waiters and waitresses but they are all busy doing nothing! I had to catch the waiters eye to order pre-dinner drinks, I had to call him over to place the order and again I had to call him over to order another glass of wine. Not surprisingly they were very quick to bring the bill when we over ran our 2 hour allotted time. The food was very nice but bearing in mind the number of amazing restaurants in London I will not be returning to Bar Boulud.
