Read the thread 9 December 2011You could organise a secret santa? Or a stealing santa (where everyone has to buy a gift, but they don't know who it's for, say £10. Each person then draws a number out of a hat, which determines the order in which they can pick a gift from the central pile. The first person picks a gift and opens it. The second person can decide whether to steal the first person's gift or open a new gift from the pile (they must make this decision before opening the new gift). If they do steal the unopened gift is given to the person that's just had their gift stolen. And so on. Obviously the further you go on the more fun it gets as you can chose to steal anybody else's gift.
Or you could play the After Eight game (unless it's a super formal restaurant!). Place an After Eight mint on each person's forehead. They must get it into their mouth without using their hands – basically by scrunching and twisting their face. More
Read the thread 23 November 2011Hi
I would suggest The Wolseley for grandeur & glamour and Sketch or The Haymarket Hotel for a modern and quirky setting. More
Read the thread 20 July 2011Hello, I'm in the process of doing the very same thing! It is made slightly easier for us as we only have c. 60 for the meal bit. Some venues I've stumbled across in my research, that should be large enough and also specifically advertise the fact that they're available for large functions (I wouldn't want to have it somewhere that wasn't used to catering for large numbers at one time):
Fredericks in Islington
Prism in the City
The Star and Garter in Putney (they have an upstairs room that they use for weddings, parties etc)
The Larder in Clerkenwell
Devonshire Terrace in the City
1 Lombard St in the City
The Bluebird in Chelsea
Paternoster Chophouse by St PaulsGood luck! More
Read the thread May 2011Congratulations!
The Pigalle Club has very good live jazz/swing music. The food does play second fiddle (excuse the pun!) to the music and atmosphere but it's a good place to get dressed up for and party like it's 1949! More
Read the thread May 2011Hello
You could try Nusa Dua on Dean Street. It specialises in Indonesian food – I've been there a couple of times and the food has always been OK, although nothing remarkable. More
Read the thread January 2011How about the conservatory at the Barbican? It's like a huge greenhouse with lush plants in. Or one of the tiki style bars that are about could work (if it would be big enough). More
Read the thread January 2011Hear Hear! It's really irritating (and surely pretty obvious to anyone who reads them anyway). More
Read the thread November 2010Hi Sarah
I guess the main things to consider are:
How many people (including whether you're inviting mums, aunts etc as this will affect the kinds of activities everyone might be comfortable with)
Rough budget per head/how much you think people might be able to afford. Also whether you need some money from them up front to cover any deposits Timescale – will it be one day or night out or do you want a weekend away
Where it will be – Close to home, or away. Will you have to help people with accommodation?
Food & drink – any special needs. Plus not running out of drink!
Information – people like to know the basics in advance (date, what to wear etc); are you going to do it via email or send paper invitations
Types of activities – girly pampering sessions or something more adventurous (go-karting, adventure trail things, sailing) or traditional hen party things (naked butler etc, or how about a private karaoke booth at somewhere like Lucky Voice?)
Decorations/costumes – Will the bride want L plates etc. Do you want to get balloons etc to put up? If you want people to dress up in a certain way it's best to let them know as far in advance as possible so that they can start collecting bitsI was at a friend's hen party a few weeks ago which was great: 10 of us rented a big house in Hampshire and had a talk from a “foreplay expert” on the first night (I think the company was called milky moments?) and then on the next day we went Go-Karting during the day followed by cocktails and a naked butler back at the house in the evening. It was very relaxed and friendly.
If you're looking to organise a night out in a bar before Christmas then I would advise you to look ASAP as they are getting very booked up (I'm having problems finding one for an event myself!).
Good luck! More
Read the thread November 2010Hi Shadia
How about Coq d'Argent in the City – they have a lovely roof terrace. Also the Roof Gardens in Kensington are lovely and there's the Hempel Hotel. I'm struggling to think of other restaurants which might be large enough and have outside space in central London (although I'm sure other people will know of somewhere!) There are various hire venues that would – Stationers Hall, Canon St Roof Gardens, House of St Barnabas to name a few.
Good luck! More
Read the thread November 2010Hi Zeus
I've always thought it would be cool to arrange a party in the Natural History Museum, in the hall with all the dinosaurs. Definitely very unusual!
For boats I would have a look at the Dixie Queen – it's a massive replica of an American style paddle steamer.

Read the thread November 2010Hi Sarah
Liberty have event spaces. The Fashion Museum in Bermondsey also do events.
Good luck! More
Read the thread November 2010Hi, how about Kettners – they have various different areas that you can make bookings in and are quite reasonably priced. Good luck! More
Read the thread July 2010If you want somewhere high-end then Rousillon do an amazing vegetable tasting menu (it's not a vegetarian only restaurant though so other tables will probably be eating fish. More
Read the thread July 2010Hi Jojo
How about Avenue in St James? They have a mezzanine area where you are raised above the main restaurant but still feel a part of it.
Good luck! More
Read the thread July 2010You could try the following:
-The Horniman Museum (south east London, in huge gardens) -The Pump House Gallery (in the middle of Battersea Park)
-Fredericks restaurant in Islington
-Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham (might be a bit too much wedding and not enough hippy but it is very beautiful)
-The Orangery in Holland Park (might be same issue as above but it's quite hard to think of too many hippyish wedding places in London!)Or if the outside element is negotiable then these are a bit quirky and unusual:
-Wiltons Music Hall
-The Twentieth Century Theatre (no wedding licence so for reception only)
6- St Chad's Place (again would have to be for reception only, but it's only 5 mins walk from Camden Registry Office, near King's X and various churches)
-The Jerwood SpaceGood luck! More
