Read the thread December 2009I agree with Rick – though I have to say I didn't regret a single penny of the money we paid our wedding photographer, despite being significantly more expensive than Rick's very reasonable price. Check out the wonderful Duncan Kerridge. Also remember that you can scan in the prints if you know someone who has a very high-res scanner – of course you still have to get them printed off but cheaper than ordering a fresh set. More
Read the thread December 2009A friend used Louise Richardson for her wedding invites – I think she might be able to do hand-written invites if that's what you're after? More
Read the thread December 2009isn't there a new chain called chilanga – though i think they may be quite casual, more fast food really More
Read the thread November 2009Please say they're not! They look okay (ish) from a distance but close up still really tacky and dated I think More
Read the thread November 2009Apparently not – they only get a five quid discount! More
Read the thread November 2009Just had breakfast at Soho House's new place, the Dean Street Townhouse. You can get a room there for just £95! We asked to see one and though they are tiny, they are super luxurious. Thought we might get to see a few exciting celebs but no, just Richard Bacon. Oh and PS check out the wallpaper in the loungey area just off the restaurant. It's very saucy… More
Read the thread November 2009Love it. Someone said that at Kanaloa you can drink champers out of a cannon! Bit like the treasure chest at Mahiki More
Read the thread November 2009Yeah I agree – venues seem to think that if you preface anything with ‘pop up’, it denotes instant cool and cachet. The original pop up, the Double Club, was fantastic but I think the term will probably become as meaningless as ‘members’ club' soon. More
Read the thread November 2009How about the new Proud Cabaret? I'm going there with a bunch of girls for my hen reunion in a couple of weeks. It looks like a proper old supper club (I've always thought Pigalle Club was a bit too gimmicky) so maybe give it a go. Think you can hire a VIP area there too More
Read the thread November 2009Glad to hear the Crown & Goose is still going strong – it was my favourite local haunt when I lived in Delancey Street (on which it is situated) a few years ago. Seems to have resisted ‘gastropubification’ which is pleasing More
Read the thread November 2009I'm organising a corporate skating outing for my firm but can't decide which of the many there now are in London to go to. Can anyone say which is the best outdoor skating rink for corporate groups? More
Read the thread October 2009did anyone see urban junkies the other day – pinewood are doing a limited series of proper drive-in movies, what a fun idea. good films too. wonder what the food will be like though More
Read the thread October 2009Does anyone else think the star rating system for hotels isn't worth the paper it's printed on? I stayed in a five star hotel a week ago and despite paying £350 for our room, we were given possibly the worst room in the house on arrival, which I wouldn't have paid £200 for, let alone the full whack. We complained and got moved to a lovely room but when you end up paying £5 per person (not per tray) for any food or drink you want brought up to the room, you start to feel like you're being royally ripped off! Maybe I should stick with four star establishments – as far as I can see, there's not much difference. More
Read the thread October 2009I agree Kaprow – and I definitely wouldn't drink as much alcohol if the soft drink alternatives were more inviting. I love those Fentiman's drinks, esp the punchy ginger beer. More
Read the thread October 2009I've been tasked with organising a party or a drinks thing at, and i quote my boss, ‘the coolest bar in london’. Not being very cool myself, and not a frequenter of cool bars much anymore, I have no idea where to start! Can anyone help?! More
Read the thread October 2009The Grand Connaught Rooms might be a good option, they are reopening next week and have ballroom space, also I heard at one of the seminars at Old Billingsgate that a new venue is opening in Northumberland House which I seem to remember has two ballrooms More
Read the thread October 2009I think you'll be hard pushed to find somewhere that cheap but I think Sound London have got some deals for about £35? Or maybe try a shared party, they are always cheaper. More
Read the thread September 2009Because our venue doesn't allow naked flames! And I hate those LED tealights, they look really tacky. More
Read the thread September 2009I am getting married in four weeks's time and am desperately searching for some cordless lamps for our tables. There are lots of very ugly ones out there but I'm looking for traditional old-school ones with tassles, or those Tiffany style lamps. I've searched countless websites but the only ones I've found that are perfect are up in York and they charge a hefty £500 delivery! More
Read the thread September 2009there's also a cool little hidden away venue down in greenwich, think it's called oliver's. More
Read the thread September 2009I really like the views from Paramount, that new members' club at the top of the Centrepoint building. Also there's a new bar called Attic over in Canary Wharf which I think is run by Inc Group, very sexy at night and you can get right up against the windows, scary for someone with vertigo! More
Read the thread September 2009Also there is a really fun venue called Favella Chic which you may be able to hire privately, it's got this amazing DJ at the top of a tree trunk (has to be seen to be believed!) also Home is good, has a private downstairs space as does electricity showrooms (i think it's still called that) and there's a bar on the way down to liverpool street which could be called the light bar, and has outdoor space. oh and rich mix. don't forget shoredtich house too, though it will probably be a bit pricey. sorry for babbling but i live in the area so know lots of venues there! good luck More
Read the thread August 2009Can anyone who knows anything about jazz advise me on the best place in London to listen to it? Ronnie Scott's I know of but there must be others? More
Read the thread August 2009i'm on a really tight budget – looking for catering staff, doesn't need to be silver service, to serve tables and drinks at an event in october in london. i've been quoted about £11 a head so far for waiting staff, does that sound reasonable? having had no former experience of these things, i've nothing to compare it to! any recommendations would be great More
Read the thread August 2009what does everyone think about twitter? I can see its appeal but wonder if it has any longjevity and if it's something all events companies should be getting involved with. More
Read the thread August 2009I'm trying to come up with ideas for my wedding in October for table centres too! Florists are so expensive. Our theme is decadent jazz club. Maybe for Thai rather than flowers, you could do a beautiful bowl of lotus flowers floating on water with mini tealights? Or create more of a plant-based arrangement using fragrant Thai herbs? More
Read the thread July 2009I was at Turnberry at The Open on Friday and was the only person in the whole hospitality village wearing a skirt (apart from the hostesses!) I remember reading that Jaeger and Keith Prowse have got together on an etiquette and styling guide for 2009 hospitality – I think it's a great idea, as each event varies so much. The dress code for most things is often ‘smart casual’ but what does that actually mean?? More
