My wife and I went for lunch on 19 November; the restaurant was full. We found the largely Eastern European/Asian staff to be incompetent, and had to ask several times for many things, including the cheapest available wine at £49.00 for a Chablis. The starters were bland – the smoked mackerel dish was disappointing, and the scallops (all two of them) were dressed in a tasteless green goo. For the mains, the cider cooked cod was also disappointing, although I had an excellent rib-eye steak. We would not go back again. This restaurant does not compare in any way to Marcus Waring at the Berkeley or Gordon Ramsey at Royal Hospital Road.

The Painted Heron (112 Cheyne Walk, London, London, SW10 0DJ) A good wine list, and a generally clean and pleasant environment. Staff were lazy and distracted. The food (meat and fish) all tasted the same, bland. None of the party of 4 particularly enjoyed the experience. We won't be going back.

The Ivy (1-5 West Street, London, London, WC2H 9NQ) Sunday lunch… Very slow service, average but over priced food, and a down market clientèle. Won't be going back…

Strada Barnes (375 Lonsdale Road, London, London, SW13 9PY) Big improvements in staffing, cleanliness and food recently. Generally quite good now, as Pizza restaurants go.

Cantinetta (162-164 Lower Richmond Road, London, SW15 1LY) Lunch on a Saturday afternoon: Bring your coat, the place is freezing (not unlike when it was The Phoenix). Terrible & clueless service staff; stale bread; aggressive manager; 45 minutes to get a defrosted pasta dish consisting primarily of bechamel sauce. NEVER again!

Bad value for money. This place is full of surly staff, serving food that is no better than a home BBQ. I had limp ravioli with barely any lobster (probably crayfish anyway), followed by un-cuttable duck breast. The place was too noisy to bother complaining to the nonchalent staff. The cheapest reasonable wine was a bottle of St. Veran at £36.00. Starters were £17.00 and mains £22.00, but required side dishes at £4.00 each, bringing an average main course to £30.00. Add the £6.00 cover charge (just another annoyance) and 12.5% service charge, and you're paying River Cafe prices for a sunstantially inferior product. I came away feeling disappointed…
