Ristorante Semplice (9-10 Blenheim Street, London, London, W1S 1LJ)

A great place for a great moment. Everything was perfect from start to finish. Having selected the set menu, the tuna steack was cooked to perfection and the tiramisu was I believe the best I've ever had (and I had quite a few believe me). I will come back!

Cafe des Amis (11-14 Hanover Place, London, WC2E 9JP)

This place does not deserve to be tied to French cooking I am afraid. Not that something's really wrong with it, but they lack the level of details and attention that would promote them from under average to at least good (I will come back) in my mind. To list a few: tables cleaned with a spray not moving salt, pepper and menu already on it, staff seeing a guest dropping a knife on the floor but not proposing to have it changed, …

The diner I had there 2 nights ago was really … so so. Terinne de campagne (and not champagne as shown on their web site) as a starter, not much to say about it. I have had much better ones in my life, but also worse ones as well. This was followed with a duck confit with sauted potatoes. Until recently, I never ate cold sauted potatoes – the gap was closed at this occasion. The plate itself was cold and although the duck was marginally hot (not too much and to me not hot enough equally) potatoes were not. A big disappointment as what could have been a decent dish turned into disappointment… As a dessert, I tried the hot apple tart with ice cream And again the tart was barely hot, and definitely not as much as it should have been.

Nice products but a total lack of commitment from the chef (or his / her aids) at ensuring that what is being served to their guest effectively meets not only standards but also expectations.

Suggest that the chef reads the user guide that came with his microwave or gets one. Sure that he can make some very good use of it…

Smollensky's on the Strand (105 Strand, London, WC2R 0AA)

Of those 4 places I visited this week, Smollensky's was the one with little, if any, expectations from me. I recalled having had diner there several years ago with some colleagues but that was it – nothing particular to remember. And 90 minutes later Smollensky's became the place I left being the most satisfied, by far, out of those 4 visits.

Upon arrival, my first contact was not really good: no reservation at my name, although I did receive confirmation from squaremeal that a table was booked for me. Finding a table was not an issue as many were empty, and getting Smollensky's to agree on the meal discount was no issue at all equally as I showed the confirmation email I received to their manager. And was granted 50% discount on their entire menu… Nice surprise!

As a starter I went for the scallops. And these were simply delicious!!! Cooked to perfection, plate being dressed with mashed peas and a few grilled thin slices of bacon. Nice to look at and great to eat! I then had Jambalaya as main course, a souvenir of some great dishes I enjoyed in the US many years ago. I was initially surprised to see that the rice came separated from the rest (chorizo and cray fish) but really enjoyed eating the entire plate. Intense flavours, spicy bot not too much, hot again to perfection. A real pleasure.

I did not feel like going for desert so it all ended there. To add to what was said already, the wine list was very good and prices were not extravagant for once.

No doubt that I will come back…

Swithins (21-23 St Swithins Lane, London, EC4N 8AD)

A good place to go but… having booked a table at 7 PM I was only offered what shows as the Evening Menu, not the Fish one which I was looking forward to tasting – this was a big disappointment to me. When looking at the Fish Menu on Swithins web site there is no notice of this being unavailable at nights…

Sill I had gravadlax salmon as a starter (great dill mayo served with it), raviolli (stuffing was very good) and tiramisu that, to my opinion, lacked some alcohol on the genoise / biscuits but tasted good.
