The Draft House Westbridge (74-76 Battersea Bridge Road, London, London, SW11 3AG)

Expecting a traditional pub I was surprised to find it spacious and inviting; the large windows lighting up the pub draw an emphasis to the bar, which is the centre piece of this welcoming pub. The bar was arrayed with various beers on tap, dripping with the cold perspiration which speaks volumes to educated drinker on a hot summer’s day. The atmosphere was relaxed; soft blues music filtering through the speakers, accompanied by the general hum of conversation from various drinkers and groups of people seated at tables outside having a meal. Clean and pristine, the seating areas are upholstered in comfortable brown leather and the theatre style kitchen is also an excellent addition with the chefs “on display”.

I was immediately acknowledged at the door and seated in a comfy booth. From the endless beers available I decided on the Oyster Stout listed on the Daily Guest Menu, and recommended by the barman. The food menu consists of British Cuisine with fresh, local ingredients. Specials boards are dotted around the pub. It was a tough choice between the Pork and Veal Meatballs and the Chilli Burger, but I finally decided on the latter. My food arrived in good time, well-presented, a good sized portion with fat chips and salad on the side. As chilli goes, there was just enough tingle in every bite to keep me wanting more.

Perfect for a lazy afternoon meal or a big night out with friends, The Draft House appears capable of catering to all needs; the beer menu is varied enough to enjoy a single exotic pint or a lengthy afternoon of drinking, the food menu is well priced for the quality they serve and diverse enough to appeal to all customers, and the function rooms have enough space for party’s of up to 80, with a DJ booth, private bar and a dance floor.

Don’t be too surprised to see one popping up in your local area soon… I hear they are looking to add another 5 to their portfolio by the end of next year.

Wahaca (66 Chandos Place, London, WC2N 4HG)

Located just off the piazza in Covent Garden is a small basement restaurant. From street level one can see the slight glimmer of the reclaimed furniture through the windows… if you are passing early enough. Walking past Chandos Place after 6pm, however, will only gift you with a view of people queuing by the roadside. And queue they do! Most evenings in Wahaca in Covent Garden are busy… and I mean 9000 people a week busy. As one of my favourite places to have Mexican food in London I am used to the ambiance and buzz experienced in Wahaca. I thought it would be the perfect venue for 8 of us to begin our night out in Covent Garden.
In such a busy restaurant the first thing that hits you is the vibe; the constant buzz of conversation, waiters and waitresses moving through their sections like seasoned professionals and all the while people being seated or paying and leaving.

Having arrived in dribs and drabs, we met in the bar after being greeted by a friendly waitress at the door. They won’t seat you until your entire party is together, but we had a few Margaritas’ to keep us company until the rest arrived. They quickly found us a table to accommodate 8 and brought over our drinks with the same speed of service.

The menu is a mix of Mexican “street food” and main courses. When the waitress arrived to take our order we happily told her to bring us 2 of everything off the street menu. The food arrived as it was ready; which was perfect for a group of lads starting out for a long evening. This gave us time to chat amongst ourselves and still appreciate the food arriving at our table. It also offered us the opportunity to pick what we wanted, making great interjections into the conversation.

The food itself was exquisite; delicious and well presented. The street food menu is, in my opinion, a smaller version of boutique Mexican dishes served tapas style, which only encourages conversation. The service was spot on and the waitress anticipated all our needs. The atmosphere was… More
