Roka (4 Park Pavilion, 40 Canada Square, London, E14 5FW)

One of my favourite Canary Wharf eateries. At Roka you can have it all. Literally! The superb tasting menu forl unch or dinner, is probably one of the best value menus with really amazing food, I have ever had the pleasure of tasting!

The service is friendly although not always the most knowledgable. The interior is what you would expect from a Japanese restaurant, simple clean and fresh. You can see the kitchen hard at work and smell the gorgeousness you will soon be eating…

The drinks are great and my favourites from the tasting menu include the butterfish sushi, rock shrimp with chilli mayo and the crab hotpot. Mango and green tea ice cream if you have room, is amazing! Oh and off the tasting menu – the lamb chops… YUM. If you have time pop up to the terrace, its a lovely spot for a cocktail and smoke!

Sketch: Gallery (9 Conduit Street, London, London, W1S 2XG)

Sketch Gallery is a vibrant sophisticated and fun place. The interior is amazing! The screens with strange cartoons and symbols frolicking keep you entertained, as does the general decor of a futuristic funland. The people watching is fantastic, and the food is not bad at all! All very modern and fresh – I had a starter of lobster bisque followed by steak tartar, and neither disappointed although I wish I had room for dessert! The newspaper style drinks menu was fun and offered some tasty cocktails. And of course… no visit to Sketch is complete without a visit to the loos. Enjoy this masterpiece of British eccentricty.

Sri Nam (10 Cabot Square, London, E14 4EY)

Sri ‘nom nom’! Delicious thai food!! Maybe its because as I child I watched Ken Hom cook, but I do think this is delicious perfect thai in an easy setting.

The dark moody interior lends itself to making what you want of this place. Whether you go for a bento box lunch which is amazing value for money and good food, or a proper dinner in the upstairs restaurant – it is always a treat. The staff are as friendly as you can get in this type of restaurant, and very accomodating. Large groups are welcomed and nothing is too much effort. This is my corporate lunch staple for anyone who knows good spicy food! From the prawn crackers, chicken green curry (one of the best I have had!), to the ‘tiger cry’ beef, each dish is mouth-watering.

Its the only thai restaurant in Canary Wharf (there are others in the near vicinity) and this is the best. Its just a shame they are closed on weekends!

Veeraswamy (99-101 Regent Street, London, W1B 4RS)

Veeraswamy has so much history around it, so to finally visit was exciting! However once inside, there was a distinct lack of atmosphere and the staff did not seem overly enthusiastic, as I would expect of someone working in such a well known prestigious establishment.

It seems that Veeraswamy is coasting on its history but it seems to do little to emanate its charm. The food IS good, but I dont think its good enough to subsidise the average interior and service. The prices are quite high, so you expect more ‘bang for your buck’ and you dont feel you get it. Thank goodness that I was taken out for a work dinner so the bill was not an issue, otherwise my review may have been a little more disgruntled! I am glad I have vistied but I probably will not return unless I hear of a massive revamp. I hope it stays open as it would be shame to lose this indian instituion of London, however I dont see it lasting in the current fashion.

Hush (8 Lancashire Court, London, London, W1S 1EY)

I have to disagree with most reviews about Hush… this is one of my favourite ‘catch up dinner/ drinks’ places in the west end.

Hidden away in a tiny courtyard that you could blink and miss, it makes it feel special. The atmosphere is lively and fun, whether you are sitting in the downstairs brasserie, upstairs bar or restaurant. I think this is probably a great place to have a bottle of wine and a good chat… you can hear eachother talk, people watch and be as loud or quiet as you like!

On my last visit, the service was lovely. The waiter was attentive although not overly, and we had lovely food. We ended up staying there for hours until they very politely had to kick us out! It is a little more on the expensive side when a pizza express could do for a girly catch up, but it has a very nice feel to it and if you can nab an offer online like we did, then why not?! Give it a try… I have a feeling that most wont be disappointed.

Restaurant Critic

Jamie's Italian Canary Wharf (Unit 17, 2 Churchill Place, London, E14 5RB)

Jamie's Italian… after all the excitement of an new celeb opening in the Wharf, this was unfortunately a disappointment.

The interior is nice, with a big wooden entrance and busy canteen feel. However I have to agree with all the other reviews – the non-booking policy is ridiculous. I am not sure if this was intended to be fashionable, but it is just irritating! The only other place that I regularly visit that has this policy is far more worth the wait (Ping Pong! lol)

The food is sincerely average. I visited with a friend who had eaten here before and didnt mind indulging my desire to try this place out. He was smart and ordered a burger. It doesnt look good when the best plate at the table is the non-themed food. The risotto dish we shared as a starter was decent but nothing spectacular. One might expect some vibrant flavours when a reputation is at stake. And my pasta dish … again, I could have done this at home.

The service was also slightly prickly. The waiter was a very metro/camp snob, who perhaps hasnt yet received his Ritz Carlton customer service training! There is a slight difference in educating diners on ‘how’ the courses in an Italian menu work and making people feel idiotic if they are well aware ‘how’ it works but choose not to follow it. I really dont believe in being forced to take an experience!

The prices are fine, although I feel more like this place would do better without the Jamie label, a booking system and lower prices. It would then probably thrive. It would possibly be the Byron burger of Italian in the Wharf (decent food, no fuss or expectations!) There are much better independent Italian eateries out there.

Unfortunately I know that although I admire Jamie's philanthropic ideals, I will not be investing to eat here again.

China Tang at The Dorchester Hotel (The Dorchester, 53 Park Lane, London, London, W1K 1QA)

It is at the Dorchester – this is probably the highlight lol. I had high hopes for China Tang, institution of chinese food in a glam location. However the restaurant itself is tired and uninspiring, and the food is quite average. There is no real atmosphere and the staff are not great. I really cant understand why it has the reputation that it does as I feel more that this was maybe once a colonial style outpost for chinese food for the British and now with the comparison for everyman's palate with good local chinese, this place is struggling to compete (I have no idea about its history, this is just my impression). I would be surprised if they dont feel the need to up their game sooner or later. I wouildnt bother going… head to the Dorchester bar for a far better experience in the same building I would say.

Callooh Callay (65 Rivington Street, London, EC2A 3AY)

A great little place for delicious, well made and well priced cocktails in Shoreditch. Easily identifiable by the chanel-like CC logo above the door, this is a quirky tiny bar with oodles of fun. The staff are fun and friendly, the music is always on and mostly pretty good! There is another room in the back for private hire as well, through doors that look like ANarnia's wardrobe… it does feel like you are in Wonderland after a few drinks! The ladies bathroom walls look like they are made from old cassette tapes, I love that! And their ‘smoking area’ is a tiny space in the middle of the building, which is outside! Its a fake garden with astro turf where you can stand and smoke freely whilst looking up at the chimneys of the neighbouring buildings, and you will be sure to start many random conversations with other awed visitors and the Shoreditch trendies alike. Did I mention the cocktails are great?!

The Gun (27 Coldharbour, London, London, E14 9NS)

The Gun is my local… how lucky am I?! A gorgeous old building in good condition, right on the waterside. It feels like a proper pub, but definitely has the wow-factor of a well maintained modern gastro-pub at the same time (contradicting I know!).

You are spoilt for choice – a seat in the front or back bar areas, or the main dining room or private room, or even on the terrace? In summer you even have a Portuguese barbeque area (with a pub quiz on Mondays!) The Gun has so much to offer its unbelievable. Good value for delicious sophisticated pub grub or a more gourmet British menu in the main restaurant, alongside well priced drinks. For a relaxing meal or a few drinks, in a stunning location in this area, there is no where better to go!

Gaucho Canary (29 Westferry Circus, London, E14 8RR)

Who doenst love Gaucho?? Always an experience, even if you have been there a hundred times, you always want to see the meat board with all the different cuts of beef! Everything is always so delicious and I have to say that once I actually even managed to have a 3-course meal there (what a pig!) Food is delicious, (especially the cheesy bread – always ask for more!) service is impeccable and the venue has a trendy, moody dark vibe that I love!

Gaucho Canary over and above the others has a fantastic waterside location, where you can sit outside and enjoy the views and it is never too quiet. Brilliant place for a good steak and red wine or just a cocktail by the water.

First Edition (25 Cabot Square, London, E14 4QA)

First Edition is nice. But not mcuh more. It is simple, fresh, light and airy. With food to match – clean fresh menu that is ideal for something healthy or a client lunch. The seafood is not bad although there is sometimes a distince lack of atmosphere. In the evenings however the place gets very busy and the covered outdoor area is a nice spot to take in the sunset, especially in the summer when they sometimes have live music.

El Pirata De Tapas (115 Westbourne Grove, London, London, W2 4UP)

The first good tapas restaurant I have eaten at in London! I have yet to try Fino and Barrafina that I am told are contenders, but this place has alot to offer!

A lovely atmosphere, with friendly staff, and a bustling lively atmosphere that still holds an element of sophistication. The food was very very good on our visit, and they were happy to accomodate a large group easily. Not too pricey for the deliciousness and it is in a good location to boot. Nothing to complain about at all – get out there and experience some real tapas!

The Dorchester Bar at The Dorchester Hotel (The Dorchester Hotel, 53 Park Lane, London, W1K 1QA)

The bar at the Dorchester… well it is an institution. Everyone should go there at least once, and then as many times as they can subsequently! Great cocktails, a gorgeous hotel and the people-watching is fantastic! Expensive but worth it!

Dockmaster's House (1 Hertsmere Road, London, E14 8JJ)

Dockmasters is firstly, THE ONLY Indian in Canary Wharf itself, so a big plus already! Apart from this, I can honestly say that the food is amazing, and the building is beautiful. The only sadness I have with this venue is that it is never really busy and so missing an atmosphere… But if you go in a group that is probably perfect as you can make your own! The staff are friendly and there is a lovely garden outside for a nice day.

Dishoom (12 Upper St Martins Lane, London, London, WC2H 9FB)

Dishoom wasnt quite what I had expected from the pre-launch hype and reviews… I wouldnt imagine you can spend an afternoon hanging out here to enjoy it fully, nor were we surrounded by lots of interesting folk on our lunchtime visit. Not much bustle but still, some good inventive food and standard yummies on the menu. I had the chilli cheese on toast which was delicious along with a nice cuppa Indian chai. I could not fault the food and enjoyed watching the chef making the balloon-like chappatti's in front of me! If the ambience was more as advertised – i think as a bustling cafe with good food, this would be a great pit-stop place at an optimum location.
