Shaka Zulu (The Stables, Chalk Farm Road, London, NW1 8AH)

Hmmm. This has received a lot of dodgy press. It's OK for a late night drink in Camden – and the scale of the place and the decor is pretty impressive. Food (we had snacks only) is OK, if expensive, and service for us wasn't as bad as everyone suggests.

Dishoom (12 Upper St Martins Lane, London, London, WC2H 9FB)

Brilliant – loved the atmosphere, loved the food and drink. Really great vibe. We came with a friend from Mumbai who kept smiling at the Mumbai Parsee Cafe references and the overall feel (slightly over my head, admittedly). Biryani, daal, lamb chops excellent. Shaved ice dessert apparently very authentic, and very tasty. Choc fondant, although a little odd on the menu, wasn't bad. Service possibly over enthusiastic. This is a great place for a casual dinner, a nice portal into a stylish, vintage Mumbai. Try it.
