Alba (107 Whitecross Street, London, EC1Y 8JD)

Food was a little slow coming out of the kitchen, but when it did it as fantastic. The beef carpaccio was a delight when sprinkled in lemon juice (never thought of that before) and had a wonderful layered texture. The livers were very tender and delicately spiced, and the cheesecake was probably the best I have had in a long time.

Barrafina (54 Frith Street, London, W1D 4SL)

Chronically busy and popular, I was able to finally get in during Chinese New Year celebrations while it snowed outside, and very happy to find out that the hype about this restauarant was justified. Razor clams were lovely and tender, the mackeral was divine, the croquettes were creamy and delicious, the quail is an essential tasty selection, and the chorizo-like meat (name I can't remember) was free from grease and incredibly tasty and moreish.
