Quirinale (1 Great Peter Street, London, SW1P 3LL)

As safe as houses – no pun intended given the proximity to the Houses of Parliament.

Fabulous food, discreet staff, good wine menu.

You would never know you are in a basement as it is very well lit and the tables are well spaced for such a small place so eves-dropping or noise levels isn't a major issue.

Thai Square Princess Street (5 Princess Street, London, W1B 2LF)

Part of a chain, this particular restaurant on Princess Street is a gem.
It is tucked away off of Regent Street, so when a hard days shopping has gotten to you, this place, rather than the obvious tourist-filled fuel stops on Regents / Oxford Streets is a great place to rest your weary feet under a table.
The menu is huge (as in lots of choice, not as in conversation blocking, Berlin Wall-esque weighty tome).
The food is very well priced and just brilliant. Unlike some Thai restaurant chains, they don't rely heavily on the Western-friendly dishes; walk away from the green/red/yellow curry and I promise you won't be disappointed.
The staff are A-typically discreet but very freindly and good for a reccomendation or two. A decent wine list and erring on the right side of dark yet comfortably lit, I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Fish Club (189 St John's Hill, London, SW11 1TH)

Pricey but oh so worth it for the best fish & chips in town.
Tuna steak with sweet potato chips is my top recommendation, but really you can't go wrong.
Decor is humble, shared canteen style tables & benches and the staff are always cheerful without being cheesy.
