This is the third time my girlfriend and I have been to Harwood Arms, and it just gets better. It's one of those rare places where you would happily eat everything on the menu – it all sounds incredible. And you know that whatever you order will be exceptional.

Service is exemplary too – my partner asked if she could have something off the bar menu for a starter and they had no problem with that (some places can be funny about hopping between menus!). The Scotch egg from said bar menu is, by the way, out of this world.

My venison steak was perfectly done, extremely tender and full of flavour, like it had been prancing around in its natural habitat 24 hours earlier! Portions are generous, though not over the top, and the accompaniments are all perfectly matched with the rest of the dish and just as tasty.

It's great value too – we had three courses each, champagne, two glasses of red and two glasses of white wine and it came to £110, including service. And when you taste the food, it seems like even better value. Can't rate it highly enough.

I'm not a massive dessert eater, but the ginger eton mess was superb and the bag of six hot mini donuts devoured by my other half also extremely good.

You get the impression they have given great thought to their menu, which changes frequently according to season, and this is reflected in the quality of the dishes they serve up.

The wine list is excellent too – the house shiraz is delicious.

This is exactly what you want from a top-level gastropub; unfussy but exceptional food, reasonable prices, warm atmosphere and service and a decent drinks menu. We'll keep going back again and again. And again… and again…
