Da Scalzo (2 Eccleston Place, London, London, SW1W 9NE) A lively, buzzy place for a Saturday night, with friendly service and good food. The house wines, served in carafes, are good value. It's a typical Italian menu. I really enjoyed the minestrone soup; the vitello had a too-sweet marsala sauce, but was otherwise fine. Our friends rated the food good and value for money was reasonable too for central London.

No. 5 (5 Cavendish Square, London, W1G 0PG) Sumptuous decor, attentive service and a good value lunch menu make this an attractive, if quirky, choice for a central London meal. The central location makes it perfect before or after a shopping trip or business meeting and a table by the window gives a good view over Cavendish Square. The public restaurant is still little known, so you're well away from crowds. Recherche is the word.

Skylon Grill (Royal Festival Hall, Belvedere Road, London, London, SE1 8XX) Excellent meal there today. Delicious chateaubriand, perfectly cooked; juicy entrecote steak; good kids' meals; fresh salads – especially nice tomato salad, with red and yellow fruits; tasty sorbets and ice creams at just-right portion sizes. Impeccable service and catered well for a wheelchair user and kids. Gave us a good table near the window – but window tables themselves are only for tables of two or four. Prices are not low, but it's value for money.

Nice, new buzzy place. Look out for orange signs outside, which appear to be in Thai alphabet – but are actually in English if you look very closely. Menu is good for main courses, but a negative is that there are no desserts. There are no real starters either – they are advertised as ‘side dishes’ and we had them served with, rather than before, the mains. I recommend the calamares though. Service was attentive, but we got the feeling they were trying to hurry us up to leave at the end, though there were plenty of tables free. (Stockpot, a few doors away, served us some nice sweet things later.)
