500 (782 Holloway Road, London, N19 3JH)

Despite occupying probably the worst location in North London, it’s a triumph! Went as part of a large..ish party of eight, including an Italian, so it was always going to be interesting. It’s a small room, and the decor is probably the only thing that lets it down, all the women in our party announced the colour scheme as a bit of a brown nightmare. Has the feel of a family-run business, service was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. The food was extremely good, particularly the starters, recommend the charcuterie. It’s what you would describe as “good honest, no nonsense Italian” strong flavours and rustic. Wine list is small but there is really good value to be had, particularly with the reds. We rolled out. Good for taking people who haven’t eaten in quite some time.

Galvin at Windows (bar) (London Hilton, 22 Park Lane, London, London, W1K 1BE)

Certainly the best views in town (although not from every table, so do ask). It’s got a formal, contemporary feel and the food is right up there. I am a fan of amuse bouches if it feels like it’s been thought about, as opposed to being a convenient way of using up some unwanted ingredients: here its very definitely the former. That thoughtful approach is carried all the way through the meal. What appears on your plate is clearly the product of people who have great skill and the kind of palates you expect of professionals. The atmosphere is serious, the clientele what you would expect to find in hotel like the Hilton but without the hookers. A great place to take your parents, loved one(s) or a major client.

Boisdale of Belgravia (15 Eccleston Street, London, SW1W 9LX)

It serves very reliable food, the emphasis is on the quality of the ingredients rather than an imaginative use of them. Great meat and fish, the best haggis in town – try it and you will be pleasantly surprised – and a very very good wine list that provides plenty of choice from all major wine producing countries and good value. The service is patchy, like too many restaurants Boisdale seems to almost exclusively recruit staff who are ‘passing through’. The atmosphere is relaxed and very clubby, clientele by and large blokes who like meat. They also have a wonderful covered roof terrace. Good for smokers and carnivores, less than ideal for those well in touch with their feminine side.

Le Café Anglais (8 Porchester Gardens, London, London, W2 4DB)

Went prepared for the worst – why would you want to dine in a shopping centre? What they should do is offer a service where clients are led blindfolded from their cars to the restaurant: once you are in the room, your experience changes dramatically. I like the room, which at first sight feels a bit characterless – and I suspect suffers at anything less than half full – but when full it feels alive and vibrant. The food was kind of Ivy-ish, simple but done well enough. The wine list isn't terrific, not a great choice I recall, and the service wasn't great, with a couple of dishes taking a long time to arrive. Good enough if you live locally, but probably not worth my trip from North London.

L'Absinthe (40 Chalcot Road, London, NW1 8LS)

A restaurant that offers wines no more than £10 or £15 above the retail price? The owner is clearly mad! Well worth the trip – the owner and front of house apparently used to work with Marco Pierre White, some of that madness has clearly rubbed off on him, he’s a wonderfully exuberant and passionate man. The atmosphere is lively, buzzy and very relaxed. The food, steak and chips with a bearnaise sauce, was terrific, full of flavour and barely requiring a knife. The wine list is great and offers the opportunity to drink some wines that most of us admire on a wine list before moving on to something a little less “heavy” on the pocket. Exactly the kind of local restaurant that should and deserves to succeed.

Hix at The Albemarle (Brown's Hotel, 33 Albemarle Street, London, London, W1S 4BP)

First time I have eaten there since the recent…ish refurbishment. Fabulous room, classic proportions, contemporary feel and the best size tables in town! It’s a formal style of dining but not stiff, the staff are very good indeed, courteous, well informed and smiley. The set lunch offered interesting choice including the trolley which changes every day, on the day I went it was carrying a terrific looking beef Wellington. The menu is traditional English. Dining companions likely to be mature and well heeled. The food was cooked beautifully, oh and the bread was the freshest I have tasted in a London restaurant.

Villandry (170 Great Portland Street, London, London, W1W 5QB)

Love this place for its simple but very good food. Don't go expecting the unexpected or the unusual: it’s always been a simple short menu. The wine list is extremely good and full of unusual things as well the standards. Service is always efficient and friendly. The room can feel bare – I have never had dinner here but I suspect it would feel slightly cold. At lunchtime though, it’s always buzzy. Any restaurant that leaves allows you to help yourself from a large bowl of whipped cream to go with you chocolate pudding gets the thumbs up, plus it has a fab delicatessen next door.

Bam-Bou (1 Percy Street, London, London, W1T 1DB)

It’s been around for a long time but it’s still very good. The service used to be awful, all attitude and not much else, but last time I went I was pleasantly surprised to find the waiting staff, smiling efficient and seemingly pleased to serve. The menu has changed little over the years but it does what it does very well, the banana fritters are the best. The wine list is okay, not many surprises.

C London (formerly Cipriani) (23-25 Davies Street, London, W1K 3DE)

Have been a couple of times and always, I’m afraid, been disappointed. One of those restaurants where it matters where you sit. If you are in the back, it’s like being in a different restaurant and not in a good way. The food is expensive and good if unremarkable. By and large at lunchtime its full of property people, although possibly less so these days. Atmosphere is lively if you are in the main room.

Cecconi's (5a Burlington Gardens, London, London, W1S 3EP)

Like The Ivy but Italian. One of the few places in London where eating at the bar is as good an experience as eating at the table. The waiting staff are enthusiastic but not always on top of things. A bit cramped near the entrance, you definitely don't want to have the first table on the right. Food is good, particularly the veal Milanese which would comfortably feed two. All the pasta dishes are tremendous and the starter-size portion would satisfy most appetites if you were having two or three courses. Clientele is well heeled and by and large on the mature side. Wine list clearly majors on Italy, but not exclusively, and there is value to be found, plus Prosecco on tap!

Bentley's (11-15 Swallow Street, London, London, W1B 4DG)

If you like your fish, then Bentley’s is as good as you will get. Upstairs is formal and a bit stiff, downstairs more casual and a little more lively, but not buzzy. The food is very good, oysters terrific and cod is a guilty pleasure these days but here a fat juicy one! Wine list terrific and there’s a very knowledgeable and approachable sommelier. Your fellow dinners are likely to be ‘mature’ but this is a place to enjoy what’s on your plate.

The Wolseley (160 Piccadilly, London, London, W1J 9EB)

The room and setting are sensational. Staff are the best in town and the atmosphere is always buzzy. Food is reliable – never sensational, but always good. The only place in town where I think you would feel equally comfortable having breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. It is unique.

Quo Vadis (26-29 Dean Street, London, London, W1D 3LL)

Just returned after the recent makeover. The room is pretty unchanged in layout and feel. Staff are friendly and efficient. The menu has something for most people, and is particularly good for fish lovers, with gorgeous oysters that are plump and tasty (Tabasco sauce was not offered automatically, but was delivered when requested). Wine list was disappointing, less than five rose's from memory and not much under £35 a bottle. Great coffee and tap water in a carafe. Clientele was very mixed in terms of age, felt a bit like The Wolseley.

The second best restaurant in a basement! The food (tapas) is wonderful, the best selection of sherry in town and a really good wine list. The service is attentive, friendly and efficient.

Le Cafe du Marche (22 Charterhouse Square, London, London, EC1M 6BX)

Service is very erratic and sometimes typically French. I am not a fan of the set dinner menu, which I think is too limited and not very good value. Lunch offers a better experience.
