Baumann's Brasserie (4-6 Stoneham Street, Coggeshall, Essex CO6 1TT)

Saw the discounted offer and decided to give this restaurant a go. The mixed reviews were a little off-putting but we arrived slightly early and were welcomed warmly with some prompt drinks and complimentary canapes of salmon mouse ice cream cones (delicious) and felt happily at ease from the moment we sat down. We had a lovely table at the front of house which was a four man table, laid out nicely for two of us. Not sure we would have had this if it had been busy but a really nice touch. The menu was rather different to most and I commented on this to our waitress who took great pride in the quirkiness of the recipes. Some people have commented on here, disapprovingly, about the mis-matched furniture and general decor but my partner and I thought it was great and fitted in perfectly with the general feel and ethos of the restaurant and menu.
For starters I had the baked apple filled with brie and my partner was recommended the tapas which we both thought were excellent. Portions were more generous than we were expecting and stolen ideas for dinner parties were in full flow.
The main course came within approving time, not too early, not too late and were again both excellent. I had the fillet steak, cooked to a perfect medium rare (I agree with a previous comment on here about the preference for a little more information on where the beef came from), and my partners duck (rolled on liquorice coal) was superb.
Desserts came in the form of a cheese board (6 cheeses) and a chocolate mousse. The cheeses were of a good selection and I thought the right size for the end of a meal. Some have commented on them being too small but I was very comfortably full and would not have wanted any more. My partner loved the mousse but could not finish it due to the richness and an already full belly.
Finished off with some espresso's which came with a few little treats and I had a brandy too which came resting on another glass of boiling water to warm it up, which was a nice touch.
